In exhibition play, Port Perry was fortunate to be able to play three games against the New Zealand National team, losing the first two and capping last Sunday's round robin with a 4-2 win. The New Zealand team was a group of very determined young men who are headed for the World Games in Newfoundland next month. In regular league games, Port beat the Aurora Mud Hens 4-3, and Aurora is definitely looking for that rematch which will take place next Tuesday in their home town. Port Perry Minor Ball hosted a six team tournament last week- end and anyone in attendance could attest to the weatherman looking favor- ably on us. The Port Juniors won three of the four games, beating Stouffville 6- 2,0shawa Juniors 2-1, and New Zealand 4-2. July 22 - Port Perry visits Aurora at 8:30, and Thursday July 24, Oshawa Reds visit Port for an 8:30 start. CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR A RINGER: With the warm weather finally arriving many people have started to take advantage of it and are moving their activities outdoors. There are many organized sports leagues to participate in or, like Epsom's Dave Philip, you can just step out into your backyard and enjoy a Sunday afternoon. RR RR: x RE Five local bikers finish in top ten Port riders place well in Giant Five Port Perry mountain bike riders are having an impact on the sport with strong finishes at the recent Giant Five mountain bike competition held at Durham Forest near Uxbridge. With over 120 riders taking part, five Port area riders placed in the top ten in their respective divisions. : Competing in the school division for 16-19 year olds, David Bornhoorn placed a strong fourth in this, his first ever event, while Josh Helsdon of Blackstock came in sixth, Derek Versloys in eighth and Ryan Hawkins in ninth position. Meanwhile, in the under 16 category, Brett Combdon finished seventh, with Craig Asselstine of Blackstock close behind in eighth Spot. All the school aged rides were over a 10 kilometer route. The Giant Five mountain bike race series is com- prised of five events, starting with the first race in the Ganaraska Forest north of Bowmanville on April 6, followed by the Bethany event on May 19. The events are put on by Alpha Racing, with Giant Bicycle of Canada as the major sponsor. With over $15,000 worth of draw prizes and gives ~ aways, riders in all age categories have an opportunity to win some great prizes. Giant Bicycle has contribu a $1,400 bike to be won at the on of the season oh draw from the names of all registered riders from all five events. And for the winners of the various divi- sions, a $3,500 full suspension, carbon fibre Giant MCM 990 is on the line for the Champion's Draw. Riding ages are varied for these events, with the youngest riders in the 8-10 year old range, and the oldest are pushing 60 years. The races are marked electronic time keeping, lunch, T-shirts for all riders and great spectator viewing for all the events.
