"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 1, 1997 -5 Some neighbors object to plan By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Scugog council has thrown its support behind a bid by Durham Region to allow the Cartwright transfer station to accept small loads of solid, non- hazardous commercial trash, despite objections from neighbors on Edgerton Rd. Council's support was unanimous after a lengthy debate Monday afternoon and input from about 20 residents expressing their concerns at a meeting in the council chambers. But in agreeing to sup- - port Durham in its appli- cation to the Ministry of the Environment, council sent a stern message to the Region: clean up your act in how the Blackstock- 'area transfer station is operated, and come up with some way to stop out of the station, or charge them for the privilege. Peter Watson of the Region's works department assured councillors Monday that the new cer- tificate will not allow any kind of hazardous wastes, and commercial vehicles will be limited to a maxi- mum 7,500 KG GVW. That's the combined weight of the vehicle and the load. "There will be no large, packer trucks allowed," he said, adding.that there is a need for small business and commerce in Cartwright to be able to get rid of trash at the transfer station. And res- idents will also have a say in how the station is landscaped, said Mr. Watson. Ward 4 rep Joyce Kelly agreed there is a definite need for the station to be able to accept the small loads of commercial waste. "This is what we are aiming for, not large com- mercial trucks," said Councillor Kelly. She added that the new certificate may help reduce the amount of trash being dumped along road allowances. 'But several residents said they oppose the new certificate, partly because they are not happy with Council supports permit for commercial waste at dump the way the station has been operated in the past. "This will lead to more expansion and more traffic. Based on past records, | don't think this (new cer- tificate) is deserved, " said Rick Butler, who lives near- by. Councillors tried to assure residents that regional officials under- stand the concerns of resi- dents, and that every effort must be made to cut down on blowing garbage and other irritants.
