22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 1, 1997 > PORT PERRY STAR "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" ---- A URAL Roots Get set for the annual Truck and Tractor Pull Plans are being finalized for the annual Blackstock Truck and Tractor Pull which will be held this Friday and Saturday evenings July 4 and 5 at the fairgrounds. There will be the regular classes of stock trucks and tractors with classes of modified trucks and pro-stock tractors. The noise and dust has certainly become a tradi- tion the first weekend in July in Blackstock. Last Sunday about 45 ances- tors of the late May and Morley Wilkins of Courtice enjoyed the spacious lawns at Nancy and Bob Bryans home at Cadmus with much visiting and many laughs. As well the group celebrated the 80th birth- day of Babe Brown. Later the 14th birthday of Leanna Bryans was also celebrated. On June 24 the annual grad- uation for Cartwright Central Public School. " Susie Gerrow, Emma Marshall, Brandi McLaughlin and Jennifer Upton very capa- bly carried out the duties of mistresses of ceremonies. Following remarks by Principal Brodie the diplomas were presented by the teachers. Strawberry Garden Party at Uxbridge Scott Museum to raise money for Ontario North and Ontario South Scholarship Fund. Gunter is making progress in Oshaw Hospital. Sympathy to the Beacock families on the passing of Olive Beacock late last week. Funeral service will be held on Monday. Sympathy also is - extended to Mrs. Ralph Sadler and his daughters Gloria and Ian Scott of Corbyville and Janice and Richard McKenzie and family of Nestleton on Ralph's passing last week. Courtney and Graham Peeters of Omemee are spend- ing some time with their grand- parents Gerald and Joyce Kelly while their mother Elizabeth is with their sister Kathryn who underwent serious surgery last week in Sick Children's Hospital, Toronto. The joint congregations of Blackstock and Nestleton United Churches held the annual outdoor service at the home of Harold and Lois Luke on Sunday morning. Two cou- ples were congratulatiod on their anniversary- Harold and Lois Luke on their 49th and Edda and Russell Bowman on teir 62nd. By Colin Beal On Tuesday, June 24, Feast of Saint John the Baptist - the patron of the Parish of Cartwright. Father Hugh cele- brated the mid-week Eucharist in honor of the saint and in thanks for, and commemoration of, the founders and builders of the parish. , Parish birthday celebrations continued through Sunday, June 29, the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul when the Rev. Canon Ansley Tucker, whom many will remember as a for- mer parish priest of St. John's was our guest. Ansley preached and assisted Father Hugh in the distribution of Holy Communion. Lots of parishioners have commented on the flowerbeds at the front of the church. Special thanks to Don and Grace Proutt, who donated all those geraniums, and to Grace, Willa Dick and Charlotte Rutherford. Catherine Corden is now retired and will spend her first full week of retirement attend- ing a course at the Institute of Church Music. On Sunday, July 13, St. John's will welcome another former pastor when Father Charles Bull will be our guest. Charles will be accompanied by his wife, Michelle, and their children Joanna, Daniel and Peter. Our thoughts are with the Fullers Walkers are meeting week- day mornings at 8:45 a.m. at S.I.U.C. to walk for 45 minutes ~ to one hour. The Moms and Tots will meet on Wednesday, July 2.
