"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 17, 1997 -19 Fields of Dreams tourney coming By Rik Davie Port Perry Star The fourth annual Fields of Dreams Slo-Pitch Tournament is ready to roll at diamonds all over Scugog on the weekend of June 27, 28, and 29. Port Perry area dia- monds will play host to about 75 teams, playing In six divisions. The divi- sions are broken down into Mens, Men over 35, and Co-Ed. The teams compete by caliber of play. Fields of Dreams is a qualifying tournament for the Ontario Labatts Slo- Pitch Championship, which sees the top teams go on to the provincial event in London in September. In addition to action on the fields, tournament organizers plan plenty of entertainment. Local D.J. Pete Kneale will be joined by Yuk Yuks on Tour, as well as Larry Horowitz and comedian/hypnotist Mike Mandel. The enter- tainment runs all weekend at the Scugog arena with tickets available only at the door for $10 per per- son. Organizers are joined by several local groups including Port Perry Minor Hockey, the Mojacks, Port Perry Boy Scouts and the Kinsman to hold the annual tour- nament, which donates its proceeds to local recre- ational projects. This year's proceeds will help install lighting at the Scugog Arena ball dia- monds. All are welcome and further information can be obtained by calling Pine Ridge Sports at 985-2839. Redmen get back on track after 3 losses After three straight losses the Brooklin Red- men got back on the win- ning track by defeating the Peterborough Deck Transport Lakers 9-6 in Peterborough Thursday (June 12). The win improves Brooklin's record to three wins and four losses on the season. With the loss, Pe- terborough drops to 1-7. Brooklin enjoyed a first period lead of 3-2, and a second period lead of 6-4. The game was a chippy af- fair, particularly in the first period, then both teams settled down to play lacrosse. Rob Blasdell played an exceptional game in goal for Brooklin, picking up the outstanding Player of the game award. Derek Collins was in goal for Pe- terborough. Jonas Derks was the offensive star for Brooklin, scoring four times; Derks is on a hot streak, with seven goals in the last two games. The explosive John Grant returned to the Laker lineup after bein out with a separated shoulder, but was general- ly held in check by the fo- cused Brooklin defenders. Brooklin hosts the Lak- ers in a rematch on Wednesday (June 18) at Iroquois Park. Game time 18 8:30 p.m. Only two nights later on Friday, June 20 the Red- men host the Brampton Excelsiors in the annual Minor Lacrosse night. Over 1,500 minor lacrosse players from the Whitby, Orillia, Beaches and Markham lacrosse associ- ation will be invited as the guests of the Redmen and that night's game sponsor, the Village of Brooklin. Also planned for that night are special pre-game ceremonies honoring for- mer Redman, the late Scott McMichael. McMi- chael, a leader on the Red- men for many seasons, passed away in February after a two year battle with Leukemia. The Red- men have dedicated this season to Scott and are wearing a sma!l number 23 on their jerseys. ay. SOCCER SCHOOL: The Scugog Soccer Assoclation held its annual junior coed tournament last Saturday. Of the three "3X local elementary school teams that entered, Immaculate Conception walked away as the overall champions. The Catholic school won two games and lost one throughout the afternoon event.
