"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" It's among numerous commitments Last payment on hall pledge IS made by Port Rotary Club By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Port Perry Rotary Club has made the third and final payment on an I0OU they gave to the town- ship more than two years ago. To help fund the con- struction of the Scugog Community Centre the local Rotary Club promised the township that they would kick in $20,000, to be paid over a span of three years. The final $6,000 cheque --- they have already hand- ed over two payments of $7,000 -- was delivered to Mayor Howard Hall at a special meeting last Wednesday night at Emiel's Restaurant. Rotary president Aubrey Oppers says that the decision to lend a hand in the expansion -- the hall was built onto the Scugog Arena --was an easy one to make. "We're always trying to help out the community, so we chipped in because we knew it was something the community needed. The facility there was not large enough for large gatherings; we used to use the Catholic Church Hall for ArtFest, but now with the new centre we can hold around 250 people in there," said Mr. Oppers, one of 27 area Rotarians. The new facility is now used by the YMCA, dance classes, small groups and other events that are staged in a multi-purpose hall. Money raised by the Rotary Club for the expan- sion came from their own fundraisers such as ArtFest, elimination draws, a Casino Night and Coming July 10-13 FESTIVAL DAYS 1997 25th Anniversary Waich the Star for details. a golf tournament in the fall. Mr. Oppers said that in addition to big-time pro- jects like the hall, the club likes to give towards other important community needs as well. Recent efforts include the "Light The Way To Safety" campaign, the Internet project at the local library, Meals on Wheels, Easter Seals, flood relief Quebec and Manitoba, and the "Secret Garden" project at Port Perry Nursing Home. The local service club has also made donations to the "Gift of Sight" program in India. Prior to the Scugog Community Centre com- mitment, the Port Perry Rotary Club made a $50,000 donation over five years to the local hospital. With their latest promissory note paid in full, Mr. Oppers caid Rotary's next project will be fixing up some areas in town. "With that commitment paid off, I think we are going to do a little work in Rotary Park; working on the Rotary gazebo to get it repainted and fixed up. We're going to commit to fixing parks and walk- ways," said the Nestleton resident. While such large com- mitments may seem like a tough job, Mr. Oppers said they pull the close club even tighter together. "We usually like to com- mit to a large project for a number of years because it gives us a purpose to collect. Everyone in the club is quite involved and these large donations bring it closer together," he said. Photo: Page 16 0) J V\'¢ 00). INSURANCE 130) NE JERRY TAYLOR LTD.
