28- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 10, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Little Britain resident takes first in beam, ranked sixth in country By Chris Hall Port Perry Star _ Looking for a strong showing at her first Canadian National meet, a 15- year-old Little Britain resident didn't disappoint anyone with her performance. After notching herself a spot on Team Carrier put on a show in Ottawa where the best young gymnasts from around the country gathered at the Civic Centre. On her way to helping Team Ontario win the gold medal for most points in team competition, the Grade 10 student managed to pick up a gold medal on the balance beam, recognizing her as the best on the beam in Canada. Certainly not disappointed with her victories, the only sullen part of meet for the Eastdale High School student may have come when she did her floor routine. Heavily favored to win gold on the floor, the local gymnast seen her gold medal hopes vanish when she took an extra step after one of her maneuvers. The misstep moved her from third place to sixth. While Team Ontario grabbed a hold of the gold team medal, individual spots were still up for grabs and Lindsey watched as she fell from the top three to the top ten in just under one day. During the competition between Canadian girls aged 14 and up, the Little Britain resident ended the first day of competition in second place over- all, but in the end had to settle for sixth place overall in Canada. "I'm pretty happy with the results from my first nationals," she said in ref- erence to being ranked the sixth best Ontario's gymnastic roster, Lindsey. Local gymnast captures gold at Canadian Nationals gymnast in Canada. While an Alberta native managed to claim the individual overall gold, the next seven single places went to Ontario team members. "The meet went pretty good but the competition was really between the members on our team (for individual rankings). The girls from the other provinces were alright though, she said, adding that the recent competition was the highlight of her eight-year gymnas- tics career. The 15-year-old advanced to the nationals after she placed in the top six during a provincial final in Brampton last April. A member of Oshawa's Gemini Gymnastics Club in Oshawa, Lindsey is coached by July Gershcovich and Elena Davidova. The young athlete, who practices close to 30 hours a week, has participated throughout Ontario as well as in Ohio, Michigan and Louisiana. She competes in all the events including vault, bars, beam and floor. As for her future, Lindsey has her hopes set on being selected for a spot on the 2000 summer Games in Australia. "I want to keep going as far as I can. I'd like to represent Canada in the next Olympics," she said. In order to qualify for the games, she 'must step up a level to the High Performance Senior class, something she says that she's prepared to do. "You have to be ranked in the top six of that next level to go and that's what I want to do," she said, adding that she's looking for a gymnastics scholar- ship to an American school so she can CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR Little Britain's Lindsey Carrier, a 15-year-old student at Oshawa's Eastdale High School, recently participated in the Canadian National Gymnastics Championship where she captured the gold medal for her performance on the beam.
