Don't whine So this is the morning after, and the people, after listening for five weeks to all the rhetoric, ranting, and reviews, have had their chance to speak. . There's nothing quite so satisfying as that moment when you step behind the partition, ballot in hand, and prepare to mark your X. It's an exhilarating feeling. It's power. It is the power to accept or reject, to pass harsh judgement on a government, or grant endorsement, and a vote for several more years of the same. It is a privilege that has been hard-fought, and constant vigilence is necessary to ensure its continuation. It is something that people in many parts of the world are dying for, because despots would deny it. | That's why it's more than a bit annoying that so many people take their right to vote for granted. Failing to make the trip to the polls is not a protest; that's done by marking or refusing a ballot. It is laziness. Apathy has a way of eroding and destroying: even the soundest of foundations. It was the Prime Minister's failure to act, for instance, that nearly lost the Quebec referendum a | couple of years ago. Every editorialist across the land, it seems, urges the people to get out and vote before each election day. And more often than not, the response of voters is lukewarm. And it is a truism that it is often those who didn't take the trouble to vote who are often those who bellyache the loudest over what they see the government doing. But if you haven't paid the price of admission, you've got no business panning the performance. So it's put up or shut up, folks. If you didn't vote, don't whine. How would you feel if it happened to your fami- ly's property? Maybe you should pay the rental fees at the post office for the mailboxes destroyed, and repair the glass that has been broken. I can understand hitting a post in the winter time when roads are slippery, but the roads aren't slippery, it is June 1. Pulling a mailbox post out of Vandals hurt innocent people the ground with the mailbox on it and taking it 500 feet along the road, breaking glass and knocking over stop signs are not very responsible actions. It is not the vandals who clean up the mess of broken glass or dig a hole in the ground to put the post back in, it is the innocent people. If this is the way you get your kicks on a wee- kend, grow up and be responsible for your actions.
