Reach a potential market of 43,000 readers -be a competent swimmer; When you envision a Vintage Car Festival, you may conjure up a mental image of some glorious jaunty jalopies being piloted by mustachio'd drivers dressed in their best country gentle- man tweeds escorting some lovely fair ladies to a spot of afternoon tea. And if you were to come to Mosport's Vintage Festival on June 7 and 8, then you would find that this tranquil image is.... WRONG! For Mosport's festival is for Race Cars! All kinds of race cars. Little ones, big ones, fast ones and loud ones and they are at Canada's home of motor racing to be raced. | Sunday morning's 90 minute enduro will be the center- piece of the weekend's action but will be preceded and followed by short sprint races for the various classes of antique machinery. This year's feature marque is the MG, so you can expect to see mountains of Minis and Midgets and scores of Sprites and Spitfires battling for the coveted checkered flag against the likes of Lotus, Porsche and Ferrari. And don't forget the tiny open-wheeled cars like Cooper, Elva and Lola. There will be plenty of Detroit Iron as well with Mustangs, Corvettes and Camaros all vying for a year's worth of bragging rights. Local driver Grant Beath will again this year uphold the honor of the Canadian American Challenge Cup as he brings his magnificently turned out (and recently repaired) 1969 Lola T-163 Can-Am car back to his home track. At the final event of last season, Grant experi- enced an upclose and personal encounter with Mosport's notorious Armco and has spent the last few months rebuilding and repairing his rare and valuable racer. "| just came onto the throttle too hard coming out of the hairpin and the cold tires simply spun the car out from under me," Grant explains. "The nose got stuffed into the guard rail and then the car swapped ends and | smacked the back end as well. | had to straighten out some front end supports and replace a few suspension pieces, a wheel and the entire fiberglass body but | really rather enjoyed it. And besides, | didn't buy this car to leave it parked in the garage!" Hopefully Grant and his compatriots will be able to keep all of their marvelous machinery between the lines and can enjoy a great weekend of racing, remembering and reliving the glory days of motorsports. to the Durham Rowing Club at PO.
