"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 3, 1997 -21 Computer access is goal An initiative is under- "way to provide all resi- dents and businesses in Durham Region with ac- cess to the newest technol- ogy, through one commu- nity network. Regional Chair Jim Wit- ty has invited more than 50 senior members from Durham's public and pri- vate sectors to a May 28 meeting where they will discuss how the communi- ty can combine network- ing needs and opportuni- ties to develop solutions to the benefit of all. Those involved include industry leaders, such as GM, DuPont and Mackie Moving Systems as well as members from all local and regional government, education, hospitals, and Bell Canada. This initiative is termed as Integrated Community Network (ICN), and was recognized as a need by The Durham Region Eco- nomic Development Advi- sory Committee (DRE- DAC). Currently, only big busi- nesses and industry have the financial ability to keep up with technological advancements happening globally. With an ICN, even home-based busi- nesses and non-profit or- ganizations could take ad- vantage of the Internet, the World-Wide Web, and _ future possibilities. Rich- ard Preston, Bell Cana- da's ICN Consultant, will present success stories from other integrated community networks and facilitate discussion on the unlimited opportunities available to the Durham Region. Human Resources De- velopment Canada has recognized the importance of this initiative and is a major partner, and Mr. Witty is giving his full sup- port to the effort. "I per- sonally feel it (an ICN) will of new regional initiative have tremendous positive impact on our region," he said. Norm Taylor, the DRE- DAC member responsible for coordinating the ICN project said "What we are doing is building an elec- tronic road system from _ the perspective of and to the advantage of Durham Region residents, both cor- porate and residentially." A public forum will be held mid to late June for community and business members who are inter- ested in lending their sup- port towards the project. The public will be advised. #» Faxing «> Business Cards # Rubber Stamps # Name Plates & Badges "> Photocopies # Laser Colour Copies # Thermal Binding «> Laminating #» Cash Register Rolls «> Address Lables 188 Mary St., Port Perry TEL: 905-985-7383 FAX: 905-985-3708 A i lM i CH can TIN el PERFORMANCE DEALERS Two ways to look YOUR PONTIAC at performance.
