"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 21, 1997 - 3 Board hires firm to draw design for fairground stands By Rik Davie Port Perry Star The Blackstock grand- stand will rise again. Plans are under way to rebuild the Blackstock fairgrounds landmark which was destroyed by an arson fire earlier this year. The Blackstock Agricultural Society has hired Rick Bruynson, an Oshawa engineer respon- sible for the grandstands at Mosport Park and the Durham Central Fairgrounds in Orono, to submit design proposals. The grandstand, the focal point of the Blackstock fairgrounds for decades, was destroyed in a spectacular fire last December. Arson was determined to be the cause. While insurance will not likely cover the cost of rebuilding, . donations have already been received from community members. An account has been set up at the Laurentian Bank in Port Perry to accept donations. sli -~ ul n ~ ag J r - | -- ddcassanay many more! "We'll use portable stands, if need be,until it's rebuilt, but with the kind of community spirit we have here in Cartwright we don't think the new grandstand is far off," she said. Ms. Kelly said that the proposal most likely to be accepted involves the use of pre-cast concrete, and will have a roof . "It will closely resemble the grandstand we lost," she said. "The craft guild is working on a quilt to raffle off and other fundraising events will be held to help offset the cost," added Mrs. Kelly. The investigation into the fire that destroyed the historic old grandstand continues. Durham Regional Police Detective Paul Mooy said "the pub- lic's help would be of much help, and is hoped for."
