"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 21, 1997 - 9 Poll hours have changed for this year's federal election Voters will see polls opening later than usual for this election, and giv- them an hour and a ha f more to cast their bal- lots in the evening. Polls for the June 2 gen- eral election will open at 9:30 a.m. and will close 12 hours later. That's a switch from the 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. window voters have become accustomed to over the years. The federal election was called at noon on April 27, giving parties only five weeks to select a candidate and to run a campaign. In Durham, five candi- dates filed their applica- tions with Returning Officer Ted Rytwinski, announcing their inten- tion to run for the region's MP position by the May 12 deadline: Q Incumbent Liberal Alex Shepherd; 0 NDP representative Colin Argyle; a Reform candidate Ian Smyth; a the Heritage Party's Durk Bruinsma; o and the Progressive Conservative's nominee Sam Cureatz. In all, there were eight candidates on the ballot last time around. Also rep- resented in Durham riding in the 1993 vote were the now-defunct. National Party, the Green Party Christian. and the Natural Law Party. In the Liberal victory of '93, Mr. Shepherd won Durham with 22,334 votes (37 per cent) with Reform's Ian Smyth coming in sec- ond with 18,500 votes. Then PC incumbent Ross Stevenson placed a distant third, with 15,014 votes. Turnout in Scugog Township was higher in 1993 than in past years when 60,289 of 86,811 eli- gible voters, or 70 per cent, showed up at the polls. Out of an estimated population of 110,000 in Durham Region, close to 70,000 are eligible to vote next month. Street in Manchester.
