ground to a halt commitment from the community. It wasn't for want of determination and effort; |. a small core of people have been meeting for weeks in an effort to lay the groundwork for another edition of the event, which has taken place in the hamlet every summer for the past 67 years. But when the time came this past Sunday for a board of directors to be elected, there were no takers; differences over the running of the event and a lack of volunteers to help make it all happen have now taken their toll. Anybody who's been in Putsey Park on the Saturday of the Regatta and has watched the children scampering back and forth in the various races (every one of them always seemed to come away with some sort of prize) will realize what a shame the loss cf the event is. But maybe it's run its course. Maybe time, and the level of interest among locals, have left the Regatta behind. Too bad. It will be fondly remembered by many, and mourned, one hopes, by more than a few. If there is a reason for optimism here, perhaps it's that people, alarmed by the | absence of the Regatta this summer, will put | their efforts into reviving the event, and making it successful once again. In the meantime all we can do is say thanks to those who worked diligently to keep the event alive, and wish them well in their attempts to make Regatta '98 happen. It would be a shame to lose the event forever. 6- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 6, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Second Class Mail Registration 0265 Subscription Rates: Includes $2.10 GST Includes $1.15 GST 188 MARY STREET - PORT PERRY, ONT. - LOL 1B7 PHONE (905) 985-7383 FAX (905) 985-3708 The Port Perry Star is authorized as second class mail by the Post Office Department, Ottawa, for cash payment of postage. 1 Year - $32.10 6 Months - $17.65 Foreign - $90.95 Includes $5.95 GST Editorial Comment BUSINESS OFFICE Office Mgr. .........ccoccevvnenne Gayle Stapley Accounting.......Judy Ashby, Louise Hope Retail Sales......
