8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 29, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice " I _ETTERS Tories' tale puzzling To the Editor: Were you as puzzled as I by Llewellyn Jones' pro- fessed concern that last Tuesday's court case involv- ing Durham Riding's PCs would damage his party's chances in the forthcoming election campaign? He has every right to be concerned; but then, was it not Jones' own petulant refusal to accept the deci- sion of his riding's nomination meeting that put them in court in the first place? Progressive Conservatives across the country will have trouble enough attracting support, having as they do a Mulroney retread for a leader, without having to contend with this kind of dissent from within. In any event, I suggest that neither Cureatz nor Jones should quit his day job for a while yet. In the total absence of any vital signs from Durham's Reformers, the next election campaign looks like a coronation for Alex Shepherd, though I suspect that the term "coronation" might offend Shepherd's republican sensitivities somewhat. Remember where you heard it first. This team has been coached by a gentleman named Todd Wilbur for the past 11 seasons, and this year, for the first time, it earned a berth in the OHMA championship round. What an exciting time for all involved. What elec- tricity in the air before the games, especially in the finals against South Point (Leamington). Those of you who have 'been there and done that' will know what I mean. This scenario is currently being played out in numerous centres across the province. It says a lot for community-based teams...but that's a whole other issue isn't it? Todd's team had an exceptional season, finishing first in the Lakeshore League and winning five of six tournaments they entered. They were undefeated in two rounds of league playoffs, the quarter finals and semi-finals. And they accomplished this through hard work, dis- cipline, team play, and a never-quit attitude...traits that made us very proud of them. Congratulations are in order. In a number of years gone by, Todd and his team seemed to have been jinxed in their quest to make the finals. I remember a lot of these disappointments Thanks for support To the Editor: such a success. vividly, as each of my three sons played.on his team for two seasons. | remember the year that the team got to the semi-finals but lost three straight games to East Gwillimbury, by one goal each time. I remember the year that the team had Cobourg on the ropes three games to one in the league finals, only to drop the last three games. Cobourg went on to win the championship both times. I remember the tough loss to Milton four years ago. Milton ended up as finalists. And most recently, I remember the year that the team had Stouffville at the brink, but couldn't quite finish them off in the deciding game. Stouffville went on to the finals. Snake-bitten, or what? There were times -- many times, I suspect -- that Todd felt like throwing in the towel. But he hung in there and persevered, and with help from support staff over the years, has finally gotten to the main event. Along the way his commitment to the players he had selected to play for him never wavered. The lesson in this story is not only for minor hockey players and coaches: it is for everyone... it is a lesson in life. As residents of North Nestleton we were astounded by the cutting of the mature century maples located on Nes- tleton Road. For 11 years we have savored and en- joyed not only the beauty offered by the presence of these trees, but their eco- logical benefits as well. Trees, as we all know are beneficial for many reasons, the obvious one being shade, certainly important due to ozone depletion; the cleaning of the air, sorely required with so much pollution; the prevention of soil ero- sion and assistance with drainage not to mention serving as a habitat for birds and other wildlife. These trees have been enjoyed by generations, but our ancestors' fore- in a matter of minutes. We know that we are not the only ones in the community upset and shocked by this untimely process. Joanna Malcolm summed up our feelings in her letter to you of April 22, "Beloved trees cut down." We think it is only appropriate that since the Township of Scugog received funds from Tree Canada, for "tree planting," that in acknowledgement of this travesty, nine mature maples should be plant- ed at the cut site immedi- ately and further, that the remaining 28 trees should be cared for to en- sure their continuing health in recognition of their unique historical perspective. Joanne and Warren Briggs, North Nestleton 'I will miss To the Editor: I am eight years old. I live on Malcolm Road and as I was coming home last week, I was very sad to see about 10 maple trees were cut down at the cor- ner of Malcolm Road and Nestleton Road. The trees were big and tall. I bet they were 50 HAT TRICK them' years old. They were healthy trees that gave us sap in the spring, shade in the summer and pro- tected the birds and squir- rels all year. I hope there was a good reason to cut them down. I will miss them. Sara Walsh, Nestleton 0 x] The Original Large Round 10 . 20pc.
