For the last eight years she had been the Academic Resource teacher as S.A. Cawker Public School. Education has been a good part of Mrs. MacMil- lan's life - whether she's teachingor being taught. After a year at Toronto Teachers' College she was hired to teach at Port Perry Public School. Starting to teach Grade 2, she remained at the school for a further seven years, teaching various grades. Also, during this time, Mrs. MacMillan con- tinuously upgraded her- self through courses at summer school. In 1963 she became employed with the Whitby Public School Board as a primary con- sultant. After her children, Mat- thew and Susan, were born in 1967 and 1970, re- spectively, Mrs. MacMil- lan began supply teach- ing. But, when John Hogg, principal of R.H. Cornish Public School asked her to teach kindergarten half days in 1975, it didn't take long to consider his propo- sal. Two years later she transferred to Epsom Pub- lic School where she con- tinued teaching kinder- garten until 1981. In addition to teaching full-time during the day, Mrs. MacMillan contin- 'ued taking courses at night which eventually earned her a specialist's" certificate in Special Edu- cation. In 1981 she transferred to Prince Albert Public School where she was the Academic Resource teach- er for eight years. It was also during these years she obtained her BA through Trent University. "I think my husband, Gord, should get a degree for looking after every- thing he had to. As well as his job, he had the kids and the home to look after while I studied," she said. In 1989 Mrs. MacMillan transferred to S.A. Caw- ker Public School when it opened its doors and has remained there since. Although retiring at the end of June, the school is hosting a retirement party for Mrs. MacMillan on Thursday, May 15 in the library from 4 to 6 p.m. "The time seems to be right for me to retire," she says. "Gord is now retired - after selling his business a year ago and now we'll be able to share some fun to- gether.:" But she also plans to re- turn to the classroom again, but this time as a student. "I now want to get my Masters degree in Sociolo- x. Nancy MacMillan is retiring this year after more than three decades in the classroom. gy- . "I'really like being a stu- dent." As for future plans, she says she's always been in- terested in politics and may pursue something in that area. "I don't know why, but it's something I've always wanted to do," she smiled. And she'd like to write some children's reading Having already pur- chased a ticket for the up- coming reunion at PPHS, Mrs. MacMillan says she was on the planning com- mittee for the reunion 10 years ago and doesn't want to miss this one, ei- ther. "I've been so lucky to have had such a wonderful career."
