------ ---------- ---------- -- -- ' od a LAAT 22- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 1, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Markham prevails in hard-fought match Shepstone Petites give their best but bow out 6-3 in final Shepstone Haulage Pe- tites played their final league game last Satur- day night against their winter long nemesis at Clatworthy Arena in Markham. The outcome of this game determined league champions for the 1996/97 season. Our Pe-: tite team gave it their best shot and should be com- mended for their hard work and determination that took them this far in the playoffs, but hats (hel- -qnets) off to the Markham contingent who downed our girls with a final score of 6-3. Prior to donning the skates Shepstone team members could taste their desire to win, and despite the score obviously learned a valuable lesson somewhere along the way participating in this sport. Winning the gold is not the most important as- pect, but being involved, enjoying each other, try- ing your best and realizing early on that success is a Journey and not a destina- tion takes these girls from one season into the next. The courage of girls like Holly Allison netminder for Shepstone who strapped the goal pads on this season for the first time and bravely stood up to whatever shots came her way. Strength and speed shown by the tena- cious defense lineup of Ceilidh, Nicole, Christine, Sarah and Brooke. High flying forwards and wing- ers with loads of "ring" sense Jackie, Jessica, Hai- ley, Erin, Whitney, Shan- non and the two Sarahs. All these players were a great group of girls to work with as I'm sure my fellow team staff members of Ray Dallas, Jim Allison ad Tom Ansell would agree. The works not done yet as we look forward to the "grand finale" of the rin- gette season, that of course being Regionals Scarborough 4 Rinks April 4, 5 and 6. "Go Shepstone Haulage Petites Go!" Noon - Pineridge Wolves vs Ball-Callery Senators - "Le Bowl." This one is anyone's guess. Both teams hate to be in this game and what's worse is that one team will lose and become "Bowl" owners for a long hot summer. Lo- cal favorites Steve Connors and Warren Geer are to- gether with the Midgets as coaches, but definitely on opposite benches for this "Plumbing Annual." All MVP Awards are sponsored by the league much to the de- light of the "non-participants." One question remains. If the game is tied at the end of regulation time, will re be overtime?? the oy - Harrison Flames vs Pizza Delight Devils - B- Final. oo The Harrison team has been quite a surprise in the playoifs after a less than stirling season. However the Pizza squad nicknamed "Sasquatch" due to body size requirements have had an impressive playoff season themselves, so a great final is in the making for the league trophy. MVP Awards will be presented as do- nated by Dave Harrison, Jim Beatty and Mike Adam. 2 p.m. - Van World Sharks vs Compton Comets - A Final. What a great way to end the 1996-97 season with two fine teams in the Annual Classic. With the 96-97 scoring champion Jarrett Harman and perennial scor- ing ace Bill Bridge going head-to-head, this should be a super final. Oh yes, there's that Harman thing about Big Brother Ken facing the younger Harman too! MVP Awards are sponsored by Dave Harrison, Ron Comp- ton, Joe Curran and Dennis Lycett. Plan to add to the arrival of spring as the boys of win- ter wrap up the season next Saturday. Players are re- minded that all 1997-98 registrations are due on April 5 and don't forget to check on June 14 for the first an- nual SHL Golf Social. Fans are welcome to enjoy all the championship action. Admission is free but cheer- ingis optional. (MBA) of Port Perry is a recreational, mixed slowpitch league. We play every Sunday afternoon from May | - Sept. 15, excluding long weekends. The MBA is presently accepting new players and one full team for the 1997 season.
