"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 1, 1997 -11 CHS band preparing for IMF meet By Angela Drew Port Perry Star The award winning Cartwright High School band is once again on the road to another Interna- tional Music Festival (IMF). This time their destina- tion is Boston Massachu- setts in May, and they're raising funds to make the trip. The small band was awarded the only silver medal last year at the IMF festival, held in Washing- ton last spring. The IMF invites bands from all over North America to be Judged and evaluated by a panel of judges. The CHS band has risen to success in the past four years while competing in various cities all over North America including stops in Philadelphia, Montreal, and Quebec City. Raising funds for the band's trips has always been an easy but a tiring job for all band members, says CHS music teacher and band conductor John Beirness. "Our goal is to raise at least one half of the need- ed cost for the trip," he said. Many fundraising events have been put on throughout the year by the band in preparation for the trip Mr. Beirness says. "The dedicated group has had to sell cookie and muffin dough and has had successful craft sales in the past," he said. A fundraising banquet sponsored by the Black- stock Lions Club will be held April 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Blackstock Rec Cen- tre, with all proceeds go- ing towards the CHS band fund. This banquet has been very successful in the past. You can expect a full course roast beef dinner with raffles, silent auc- tions and a very special performance by the CHS They're raising funds for trip to Boston The Cartwright High School concert band is preparing for their big trip to the International Music Festival in Boston this May. Here are band members Kim Headon (left), Karen Swain, Christine Cook, Amber Walsh, and leader John Beir- ness. Kneeling is Randi Micklewright. band. Tickets for this event have always been sold out in the past. "Tickets for the dinner are $15 per person and they are going fast. There will only be 160 tickets sold," said Mr. Beirness. Mr. Beirness feels very good about his band's abil- ities going into the Boston competition and is striv- ing for the prestigeous gold standing. He says in the past four years no gold standard has been award- ed to any band at the IMF competition. "You have to be perfect. No mistakes. Gold is ex- tremely hard to get. If we win the gold this year I have promised to shave off my mustache," Mr. Beir- ness concluded.
