CANCER EN REESE SN 2 | i [ 1 re] = +] ree rt eg A. mt eng " .. « vom ---- AC SRB tate ia om "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 11, 1997 - 27 D> POKI PLO ST URAL Roots Reg Renouf The village of Caesarea and surrounding area is sad- dened to hear of the passing of Reg Renouf Sunday morn- ing, March 9 at his home. Funeral will be on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Wagg Funeral Home. Reg was in his 82nd year. From what I understand Reg came to these parts in the late 30s or early 40s when his parents had a cottage at Williams Point. He later pur- chased Frayer's Dance Hall and Marina which he and his brother ran for a number of years. He was a great one in donations to worthwhile caus- es. Backing baseball and hockey teams and was gener- ous annually to the Regatta drive and the refurbishing the Putsey Park. The com- munity has lost a great citi- zen. Mabel Cawker This past week we had the sad honor of attending Mabel Cawker's funeral. She passed on in her sleep at 6 a.m. Thursday morning. Trust you have read my special on this person. Pine Ridge Garden Club Tuesday night we had a good feast at the Pine Ridge Garden Club. A wonderful address by Andrea Clarke on wild flowers and the value of many insects which do so much good for our plants and trees without spraying. This past week a bus load of mem- bers attended the six acres of Caesarea flowers, plants and various gardening accessories in Toronto. All said they had a great outing. Next meeting Tuesday, April 1 at 8 p.m. Nestleton Hall with slides of the OHA convention, plant sale and monthly competition. Lions Farmers Night Thursday night I attended the Lions Club's annual Still time to buy tickets for Ag Federation dinner By Linda and Colleen Arbuckle Nestleton News The Fourth Sunday of Lent the greeters were Art and Barb Weir. Art was the scripture reader. Kay and Robert Notman did the lenten liturgy. Shirley Jackson and Reginia Walker sang "there is a Redeemer" accompanied by Karen Yellowlees on the piano. Rev. Shearman's sermon was titled Stinkin Thinkin. The floral arrangements were in memory of Mabel Cawker and Mrs. Walker. The Nestleton Community was saddened to learn of the passing of Mabel Cawker last Thursday at the Community Nursing Home in Port Perry. Mabel was a long-time resident of Nestleton, along with her late husband Sam Cawker who resided at Scugog Point. She was the correspondent for the Port Perry Star, The Lindsay Post and Bowmanville Stateman. Our sincere sympathy to her family and friends at the loss of a loved mother, grand- mother and great-grandmoth- er. S athy is also extended to the David Walker family on the passing of David's mother. Family News One Sunday recently Neta Fish along with her grandson Chad Holland travelled to Lindsay and were dinner guests with Jim and Audrey Leischman and family. Kate Mairs and Colleen Arbuckle are attending a 4-H Leadership Camp at Port Sydney for the first week of the March Break. Hope all students are enjoy- ing their time off from school. Just think parents they're with you for two weeks. There is still time to pur- chase tickets for the Durham Region Federation of Agriculture banquet this Friday, March 14. Dinner and speaker, Roger McCombe, costs $15 per person. Call Karen at 986-0657 to get your tickets. Nestleton Presbyterian Church On a sunny, but brisk morn- ing, Rev. Fairley conducted the regular church service at 11 a.m. with Joyce Taylor as organist. Ushers wee Oliver Rohrer and Harvey Mills. Psalm 107 was read respon- sively and scripture readings were from numbers 21, and St. John 14: 3-21. Visitors were welcomed and it is hoped more children will come to Sunday School. It is held while Rev. Fairley, preach- es the sermon. The "Biblical name" for the Sunday School this week was Nicodimus - a leader who lived by faith. In the sermon, Rev. Fairley spoke of it being the fourth Sunday in Lent, and half way to Calvary. Lunch and social time was enjoyed in the Sunday School Room. 4-H News - Nestleton By Stacey and Danielle The 4-H Club met at Nestleton United Church on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. for the first meeting. The election of officers was as follows: Colleen Arbuckle as president, Kate Mairs as vice president, Bethany Newman as secretary and Stacey Donovan and Danielle McLarnon as news reporters. We made power bracelets with suede lace and beads and also made a design for a key ring. We enjoyed cookies and juice supplied by the leaders and the meeting was adjourned at 8:55 p.m. : On Tuesday, March 4 at 7 p.m. our second meeting was held at the United Church. The president opened the meeting with the 4-H pledge. Then Bethany did the roll call and we welcomed six members to our 4-H Club. We made dream catchers at the meeting. We enjoyed refreshments and the meeting adjourned at 9 p.m. All 4-H members are invited to the Fun Night held at Bowmanville Fitness Centre on Monday, March 17 at 7 p.m. Our next 4-H meeting will be held on March 25 at Nestleton United Church at 7 p.m. We will be doing folk art. Farmers Night where they expected the Federal Minister of Agriculture, Ralph Goodale to attend. I can only say that all Lions in attendance and others did an excellent job. The first thing was the Lions president Carter Roberts came down with the flu and couldn't attend. The second thing, their guest speaker, R. Goodale got snow bound in Ottawa with no flights out. The third thing was our local MP Alex Shepherd had the speech faxed to him between 4 and 5 p.m. to be given at 7 p.m. Just think what a task it was for him to read, digest, and remember a speech someone else had written in that period of time. Alex stands in when Goodale misses meeting They asked the kitchen staff to try and have the din- ner earlier than the planned 8 p.m., and have Alex speak after dinner instead of before. The kitchen staff had the din- ner ready at 7:30 p.m. but the Lioness were to come in at 7:50 p.m. to serve. So every Lion that was there got up and put the food on the tables. Our MPP John O'Toole was to come for dinner at 8 p.m, consequently he was a half an hour late with the change. We all went home with our belly full and very content with the splendid job all par- ties participating did. Saying of the Week on Inertia: It is the direction and not the magnitude which is to be taken into considera- tion. Good luck wishes as curlers head to London tourney Church and Sunday School this week, March 16 will be held in Epsom Church at 11 a.m. Anyone interested in expe- riencing a small group min- istry can do so by attending at the home of Barb Evans on Thursdays at 2 p.m. For information call Barb at 852- 5411 or Gail 985-7792.
