"Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 18, 1997 Ward 1residents reject trash pick-up From Page 1 constituents have indicat- ed they want the service, he said. "People are saying don't give me services 1 don't want, and don't make me pay for it," he said, adding he'll take his message back to council, where some members need to be convinced township-wide pick-up isn't needed. "I think they can be per- suaded to take our stand," said Councillor Moffatt. "It just doesn't make sense." One irritant for the peo- ple who use the Reach St. transfer station is the pos- sible imposition of a $2 fee for each visit this spring. Some residents of Ward 1 were among those who signed a petition that called for trash pick-up if that fee's to be imposed; it was taken to Durham re- gional council last week. Also on the agenda Thursday night: 0 Location filming. Peo- ple are still stinging from last year's film set-up that closed down Marsh Hill Rd. for days after they were promised the incon- venience would be much shorter. Councillor Moffatt said the township's new film policy will strictly outline times and locations for filming, and will employ a liaison to go between mo- vie makers, the township, and residents. "Before anybody shoots a film on public property in any respect in Scugog, they'll have to get a per- mit," he said. Residents wanted to know if the hall, built beside Scugog Arena on Reach St., is paying for itself. Councillor Moffatt said that while revenues are covering operating costs, a debt of more than $50,000 remains to be paid down. He said no major capital projects will proceed in the township until that debt is gone. "It hasn't really been marketed well," he said, pointing to a need to pur- sue more bookings for the hall. "That was the deal they sold us on: It's got to pay for itself." 0 The township budget. Councillor Moffatt said that despite massive cuts in provincial transfers, Scugog is managing to provide programs and ser- vices at levels comparable to years past. That begs the question as to why ser- vices couldn't have been provided cheaper in the past, he said. "If we don't balance the budget, you should kick us out of office," he remarked.
