Reta Rodman, a former res- ident of Head Rd., passed away last Saturday. She will be missed by her many Island friends. Don't forget the Port Perry High School Sr. Jazz Band and Jazzermize group will be hold- ing a fundraiser called "Fly Away to Banff' on Friday, Feb. 21 at the Scugog Community Hall in Port Perry. They have been invited to the Rocky Mountain Music Festival in Banff in April. The evening will be packed full of enter- tainment. Both groups will perform and Bill Lishman will be the speaker. The popular film "Fly Away Home" will be shown. Tickets are available by calling the Port Perry High School at 985-7337 or at Luke's Country Store. Scugog Island United Church The orchestra provided beautiful music during our reg- ular worship servicé on Sunday morning. It was the first Sunday of Lent and Jan Gerrow and Christy Burnett extin- guished the first candle in our Lenten Tenebrae. Charlotte Pettypiece gave a "Minute for Mission" report. The beautiful flowers which adorned our sanctuary were placed in loving memory of Carl Gimblett who Last Sunday, being the first Sunday in Lent, the first Candle was extin- guished. The Senior Choir. sang a lovely anthem "I Love You." Rev. Sheina Smith will be taking a study leave for the next two weeks. In her absence will be Dr. Dorcas Gordon who will occupy the pulpit. Anyone requiring the ser- vices of a minister in the next two weeks should con- tact the session clerk at 655-9411. A special evening cele- brating Valentine's Day was held at the church last Friday evening. The Country Boys and the Preacher (Rev. Glen Eagle) provided an entertaining musical evening enjoyed by all who attended, as well as a light buffet. This event was a fundraiser for the 1st Ashburn Scouts and Venturers. Burns Irish Night din- ner and entertainment will be held on Friday, March 14 at the church. Tickets available from Kirk Guild members, Joan 655-3900 or Margaret 655-4825. The Kirk Guild will meet on Monday, Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m. in the church to plan for further events. I have just returned home having travelled to beautiful Hawaii accompa- nied by my friend Doris Harding of Whitby. We travelled to four islands, Oahu, Hawaii, the Big Island, Kauai and Maui. Each island different, and yet so beautiful. Truly par- adise. It was sure nice to weather for a short time. passed away this week. Our sympathy is extended to Myrtle Gimblett and family. Choir practice will be held on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. The Support Group will meet on Friday, Feb. 21 at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Tara Fund Dance on April 12 The Tara Fund is put- ting on a New Country Video Dance to help raise money for families in Dur- ham Region with seriously ill children. The money raised will be utilized to assist chil- dren with transportation, meal costs and other ex- penses. The cost is $6.50 a per- son which will include a lunch. A free line dancing lesson is provided from 8 to 9pm. The music and video screen are provided by the CMT Country Video Show. The video dance will be held Saturday, April 12, 1997 at the Dnipro Hall in Oshawa. All proceeds go to The Tara Fund. - Eat od
