L 2 0) 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 18, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Time for ball registration It's almost that time again. Winter is winding down, and Port Perry and District Minor Softball As- sociation is gearing up for the 1997 season. Registration dates will be Feb. 22 and March 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day at the Chamber of Commerce office (old li- brary building) on Queen Fees for ages 9 and up have remained the same as last, year, with family discounts in effect again. The rates for T-ball and ages 7-8 have actually been reduced by $25 and $10 respectively, per child. The prizes from the fundraising tickets will be electronic equipment with a total value of over $750. Late fees will be applica- ble after March 31. The executive this year will be comprised of a six- member committee which includes Dave Dalton, Dave Kay, Diane Knut- son, Dave McTaggart, Ken Reinhardt and our own Mr. Softball - Wayne Ven- ning. Mr. Venning will once again be conducting his very successful Skills. Development Clinic dur- ing the pre-season, as well as a coaching drive. As always, any volun- teer help would be greatly appreciated and grateful- ly accepted. Please direct any en- quiries to 985-2619. Any requests for dia- mond time should be di- rected to Dave McTaggart at 985-2301. From Page 16 also been made to the present lodge. To improve the snow- making capabilities, 5,000 feet of pipe was installed last summer. A new well, drilled last year, which has given the lodge more than ample water and ex- panded the reservoir pond for improved snowmak- ing. For snowboarders, a half pipe has breen in- stalled, and the club's first snowboarding event was held Jan.26. Trail grooming has been improved with the addi- tion of a flex tiller, the: + club's new state of the art computerized groomer. A site plan, prepared by an architect for a new 17,000 sq. ft. two-storey post and beam lodge was presented to Uxbridge Council on Feb. 3.Mr. Me- harg's goal is to build the membership up to 500 families over the next five years. Although the desire 18 to retain Skyloft as a pri- vate club, skiing is open to the public this season on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Mr. Meharg believes Many improvements when people become aware of the advantages the club has to offer (with its elevation of 1,435 feet, the highest for 75 miles around and an approxi- mate vertical of 300 feet) they'll be impressed with what Skyloft has to ex- tend. Unlike most ski areas that have the lodge locat- ed at the base of the hills, the lodge at Skyloft is lo- cated at the summit. On a clear day you can see the big ships sailing across Lake Ontario; even the mist rising off Niagara Falls. "It's a million dollar view," Mr. Meharg says. Registered with the SOD (South Ontario Divi- sion), the ski racing school at Skyloft is under the di- rection of Sandy Gardner. For those who prefer cross-country skiing, Sky- loft offers plenty of terrain and adjoins with 900 acres of the Durham Regional Forest, as well. Champion skiers have also emerged from Sky- loft. . Mr. Meharg's 25-year- old daughter Sarah Jane is rated number one in On- at ski club tario in telemark skiing, third in Canada, and ranks 20th in the world. The sport is a unique ski discipline combining al- pine and cross-country techniques. Ginny Burt, daughter of Scugog Island residents Larry and Diane Burt, was the Ontario Champi- on Telemark Skierin 1994 and ranked top Canadian skier then, as well. Skyloft is also anxious to support the community. On Dec. 27, the ski club held a Ski for Free day, in exchange for donations to six area hospitals. The Ux- bridge Cottage Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital received the top donations. The eventual addition of tennis courts, a swimming pool, volleyball courts and mountain biking trails will also fulfill Mr. Me- harg's dream of making Skyloft a year round fami- ly sports facility. Now retired from the real estate business, Mr. Meharg is making Skyloft a full-time commitment. With his 66th birthday ap- proaching, he chuckles, "This project is keeping me young." Cartwright girls edged in final The Intermediate Girls " Basketball team played in a 36 team tournament last weekend (Jan. 31 and Feb. 1) with teams coming from all over the province. In the games on Friday night, Cartwright defeat- ed E.A. Fairman from Whitby 47 to 15 and Wil- low Road from Guelph 32- *9. This advanced Cart- - Wrestlers From Page 16 Club. Mr. Hart also said that PPHS is also heavily favored to win the LOSSA Championship (regional level) as well as the OSSA championship (Ontario High School). Also a big supporter of the two students is David Robinson, a teacher at the wright to the "A" division playoffs at Sinclair High Schoal. In the first two games on Saturday, Cartwright defeated Sunset Heights from Oshawa 25-22 and Dr. Thornton from Whitby 23-21. "This advanced Cartwright to the final four of the tournament. In the next game Cart- on road school. "They're both very good. Jay Blain is olympic mate- rial though. He's young and he's very good. He's going to represent his country someday." Other local standouts in high school competition are Trevor Karkoulas, Ben Blain, Matt Sturgis and Brad Martin. wright defeated Highbush from Pickering 38-23 to advance to the champion- ship game for the whole tournament. Here Cartwright played a super game but lost the ball in the last 25 seconds to have Palmerston from Whitby defeat us by one point in a score of 23-22. Although the girls did not win the final game, they are to be commended for their outstanding drive, hustle, ski)ls and team spirit. Each player received a hat for being runner-ups in the tourna- ment he. bon contend- ers for the all-Durham championships next month. The strong fan support from all the parents present is greatly appre- ciated by the players and coach. Will play competitive soccer ing season.
