With a 2-1 lead in the best of five series this was a must win because no- body wanted to go back to Cobourg for a fifth and de- ciding game. This Juve- nile team, which is co- sponsored by Mike's Food Basics and Aldon Trans- mission, came out flying and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. Ian Shrigley got Port on the board assisted by Rob- ert Gracie and JeffMcCon- key. Kevin Gray increased Port's lead to two assisted by Joe Jackson. Cobourg scored the only goal in the second to set up a tense third period. After the flood Port got back on track as Kevin Gray scored his second of the game assisted by Brian Nash and Ian Shrigley to give Port a 3-1 lead. Cobourg did not give in as they scored mid way through the period to nar- row the gap to 3-2. Shortly after Cobourg"s goal, Port's Brian Nash took off on a breakaway and scored to give Port the two-goal lead again. The last few minutes of the period were extremely exciting but Carl Phoenix iced the game for Port with an empty netter for a thrilling 5-2 win. Scott Parry continued his solid goaltending in net for Port with some fine saves. With this win Port won the series three games to one and move on to the next round. 4 = Tween B girls earn two victories as their playoffs start Port Perry Guardian Tween B started their playoffs this past week- end with two games against Whitby and Ajax. Saturday they were home to one of the strongest teams in the di- vision - Whitby. On two previous meetings we had tied both encoun- ters. This game started quickly with Port scoring shortly after the one min. mark. Sheena netted one on a nice passing play from Heather T. and Sa- rah. Less than two mins. later Rhea slid on in, as- sist to Heather T. Whitby came back to tie it up, then Port regained the lead with Heather T. scoring from Nicole. First period ended with the visitors tyingit up. In the second Whitby took the lead. The Guar- dian Tweens came back to tie. Sheena got her sec- ond of the game on a re- bound which she back- handed into the upper corner. At 2:19 the oppo- sition took the lead. Nineteen seconds later Sarah scored, from Ni- cole to knot it at five. Fi- nal - Port 5 - Whitby 5. Sunday Port travelled to Ajax for their second game. The girls jumped on the Ajax girls right from the free pass with Sarah scoring one min. into the match, assist to Shannon. Sixty seconds later Sheena scored from Heather T. and shortly thereafter Sheena scored again, assist to Shannon. Ajax got one back. Port scored again with Heath- er T. finding the mark, assist to Sheena. Before the period was over Port had scored two more, one by Sarah, unassisted and by Jill, assist to Sheena, period ended 6-5 in our favor. Port Perry led the best-of-five series two games to one and had to win this one to avoid a trip back to Cobourg for a fifth game. McClelland Port Perry Star Just when they need it the most, the Port Perry Modack scoring punch has gone south. And it's not even March break. After a long lay-off of more than a week, MoJacks were back in action with three games over the weekend, and lo and behold, the usually reliable scoring attack was nowhere to be seen as the team lost all three by scores of 8-1 to Uxbridge, 2-1 to Georgina, and 4-1 to the Little Britain Merchants. ~The scoring drought could not have come at a worse time as the green and white find themselves locked in a dog-fight with Georgina and Little Britain for the final two playoff berths in the Central Junior C Loop. The post-season fortunes of one of those teams will be decided in the next week as each has three games left to play and one will be a bystander when the playoff rounds get underway. "Yes, we're concerned about that (missing the play- offs)," said head coach Murray Parliament Sunday night after watching his squad lose to the Merchants on home ice by a 4-1 count, the fifth straight loss for the squad. MoJacks have not won since Jan. 12. when they tripped the Merchants 7-2 at the Scugog Arena. In the five losses since, they have managed just eight goals. But Parliament is a long way from pressing any panic buttons. He pointed out that in the losses to Little Britain and Georgina, the MoJacks had their share of chances but ran into some very hot goaltend- ing. Georgina keeper Brad Hackert was nothing short of spectacular in holding MoJacks to a single goal Saturday. And it was much the same story Sunday night, as the Merchants' Mike Beamish stood on his head, especially in the second frame, when MoJacks could easily have cashed in on a half dozen good scoring chances. "Nothing was working for us around the net," said Parliament, in something of an understatement, adding that despite the losing streak, team spirit remains high. He's going to tell the players to just keep doing what they're doing and even tually the puck has to start going in the net for them. Merchant Chad Desjardin broke Port's back Sunday night with a hat trick. The crafty forward, in a battle for the scoring crown, has just been named Central League MVP, the second year in a row he has scooped the honor. And it's easy to see why. He got his team rolling in the first minute, tucking home a wrap-around that had Paul Roberts fooled. Jeff Darrach made it 2-0 at ** 2:08 with a one-timer from the hash marks, and later in the period, Desjardin worked his magic while short-handed as he stripped the puck from John Fraser at the Merchant line, streaked in alone and beat Roberts cleanly with a fine shot low to the glove side for a 3-0 lead. Rob Simms finally solved Beamish in the Merchant cage midway through the third period to give MoJacks a bit of a spark. He swatted in his own rebound, but Desjardin salted things away at 14:08 with his third, again with a low shot to the glove side. MoJack scoring woes were all too evident in the middle period, when Sean Richardson had a great chance from point-blank range and drilled the puck right into Beamish's pads. Later on, the netminder made several stops on the best flourish ModJacks could muster in the game, and then Simms had Bosmish at his mercy, but rang a shot off the goal post. .
