SECOND SECTION TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1996 Tourney profits could shed light on diamonds Organizers to share $60,000 cost for upgrade to arena ball park By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star There could be lights at the baseball diamonds behind Scugog Arena as early as next summer. Scugog council has given the green light to a propo- sal from the Field of Dreams committee to put $15,000 raised from the tournament this past sum- mer -- with a similar amount expected next summer -- towards the estimated $60,000 cost for lights at one of the new diamonds near the arena. Township sharing cost The township will pick up the remainder of the cost to get the diamond light- ing project underway. It's estimated that a trans- former and hydro lines will cost about $30,000, while a similar amount is needed for the actual lights around the field. Councillors were delighted to hear last Monday that the Field of Dreams slo pitch tourney turned a profit of just over $15,000 this past summer. And committee members Terry Coyne, Frank Fielding:and Richard Green expect a similar profit next year. They said the tournament ". has become the most popu- lar in the Region, attract- ing some 3,000 people (players and families) to the community for three days each summer. Parks and Recreation com- mittee chair Karen Puckrin (Ward 5) said the commitment means the lighting project (trans- former and one diamond) will be done next year, but not necessarily in time for the start of the baseball season. Light for other diamonds? Lights for the other two diamonds (total cost of $60,000) will be added in subsequent years if the funds are available. In other baseball news, council approved plans by the Cartwright Minor Ball Association to upgrade the diamonds at the public school in Blackstock. Council agreed to provide ten loads of diamond material (rather than the usual three) as the town- ship's contribution to the project. : Plans by CMB to provide a diamond at Putsey Park in Caesarea were put on hold pending further study by Parks and Rec about the long term future use of the park.
