"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" Local farmers pitched in Blackstock Foodgrains project f > By Jason Logan Port Perry Star The product of local farmers is being usedionce again by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to feed the hungry. Work began on the weekend to harvest a 10 acre field of corn just south of Blackstock which was specifically planted to ca- ter to third world coun- tries. Local farmer, Steve Grove, decided to get in- volved in the worthy cause last April after mention of itat his local church. "It's a church thing," says Mr. Grove. The Canadian Food- grains Bank is supported by 10 churches in the area. They relay messages and details of projects like these to their congrega- tion. Mr. Grove explains that he was not the only one to take the opportunity to help out. "As a community, we looked at what we can do to help out on a world wide level," he said. The lot was auctioned off by individual acres, with people of the commu- HHL HH . "It gets peo- ple involved at the grass- rootslevel." The Canadian Food- grains Bank aids the poor and hungry of countries in Africa, Asia, Latin Ameri- ca and Bosnia. The grain is stored in lo- cal grain elevators where it will be ready when need- .ed by the Foodgrains Bank. Mr. Grove believes that 100 per cent of the crop will be used to feed those in third world countries. And Rev. Shearman said they "fully expect (the grain) to be first hand do- nated." Mr. Grove and his crew were hard at work last Saturday (Nov. 9), in mis- erable weather, harvest- ing the corn to prepare for storage.
