The Hackers and Friends Golf Tournament has been an annual event for some 20 years for this group of high school friends. In recent years the event has been primarily hosted by 'hackers' living in the Port Perry area, with some 15-20 partici- pants taking part. The event brings golfers from across the province with a new face or two each year. Tom identi- fied various types of weeks, as well as bottom en out and presented to the "#1 Duffer" and "Most Disruptive Golfer". The event is not as much about golfing as reacquainting old friendships and catch- ing upon the latest news. This year's event was hosted by Terry Howsam of Prince Albert. The event was made more special by the presence of Kay MeNenly, of Port Perry, who presented the group with a trophy in memory of her son Larry, who was tragically lost to the group in 1991. Larry had been instrumental in initiating and organizing the event. His memory will be car- ried on with the annual tournament. Rowing club shelter By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Durham Rowing Club will have a home for its shells come next season. Scugog Township Council agreed to bridge finance some of the need funds for the local club's shelter, to be built in Rotary Park. The 40x80 building is estimated to cost $31,000, with the township financing $16,000 to be paid back over a three-year period. The club has $7,000 in its ac- count now, raised from weekly bingos, and will hold fundraisers to come up with the remaining $8,000 With the interest in rowing becoming more and more popular the boathouse has become the number one priority of the club. The Durham Rowing Club, based out of Port Perry, has been in existance for six years offering both recre- ational and competitive rowing. Three high schools, including Port Perry, have students involved in the club. The club has held learn to row courses on the lake and have watched the interest grow to the point they are forced to turn away people, because of the lack of facilities. The club sees its future demands to include chil- drens summer recreational programs, adult learn to row courses and adult and senior recreational row- ing. The club currently also has three high schools on a waiting list for the club. To meet the demand the club must erect its storage facility, according to Mike Maher, of the club. There are 36 rowing clubs in Ontario, accommodat- ing some 73,000 members. Mr. Maher would like to see the Durham Rowing Club grow as Scugog is the ideal venue for a regional or national regatta, some- thing the club would like to host in the near future. content, and explained how the M.N.R. identifies critical shoreline areas for © both fishes and wildlife.
