If you go in expecting to see Bill, Paula, and family portrayed on screen, forget it; instead, sit back and let this picture pull you in, let the artists involved share, even celebrate, their sheer fascination for Lishman's many accomplishments. Accept the film for what it is, (the best family movie of the year) a fictionalized account of Bill's work with geese. Amy Alden (Anna Paquin) is brought home to rural Ontario by her estranged father after her mother's death in a car accident. Thomas Alden (Jeff Daniels) is an eccentric sculptor who has shaped his fife and environment to reflect his eclectic interests. While the two do not click, Amy resigns herself to the fact she is there to stay, despite not knowing quite what to make of her dad. Alone much of the time, Amy stumbles upon a nest of orphaned eggs, which she gathers up and nurtures until they hatch, Since geese imprint on whatever or whoever they see first, Amy becomes Mother Goose. Seeing his daughter happy for the first time since her arrival, Thomas allows her to keep the geese, slowly becoming fascinated by their attachment to Amy. Thomas learns it is illegal to keep the geese without grounding them, clipping their wings, which poses a serious problem. Nature will compel the geese to migrate, but they have no mother to show them the way, which would leave them doomed. Outraged, the artist decides to teach the geese to fly, to follow him in his ultra- light aircraft with the hope the flock will follow him to North Carolina. A further problem arises: They will follow only Amy. Thomas teaches his feisty daughter to fly, building her a craft that resembles a giant Canada Goose. Following close by in a second plane, the two set off on their journey from Blackstock to North Carolina, facing bad weather, hunters, and Lake Ontario over the course of their adventure. Director Carroll Ballard serves up some truly mystical images, particularly of the birds in flight behind the ultra-light. Most film makers fear pictures with little dialogue but Ballard Congratulations to someone who lets his mind fly free! 204 Casimir Street, Port Perry (905) 985-9725 Blackstock Ontario 986-4201 The Country Convenience Store 14020 old scugog Rd., Blackstock : PLIGED DY Open 7 Days a Week thrives on them.
