12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 10, 1996 -Scugog's in danger of losing servic From Page1 - the OMA to put more money in doctors' pockets. Dr. Gilmour has been warn- ing for months that doctors here will have to cut back on the number of patients they see in order to work with salary restrictions imposed by the ministry. The result would be a reduction in the level of ser- vice that people in Scugog have become accustomed to, he says. "With the (salary) caps in place now, it is going to have an effect on the service in Port Perry, which is unfortunate, but our hands are tied," he said. "The set-up they have now doesn't allow for a busy practice, which is the kind of practice you see in Port Perry." Dr. Gilmour said that under current salary restrictions, AUTO BODY doctore in Port -- many of whom see a variety of patients, and cary out emergency and other duties at the hospital -- will have to curtail their work hours andwbilling as their fiscal year- end approaches at the end of next March. Otherwise, they'll be working without getting paid. Doctors 'slowing pace' "There are several of us who have slowed down our pace... all against what we are inclined to do," he said. "We've all got to look at our numbers as the months go by and make sure we're not going to exceed our cap when the end of March comes around." Doctors have been upset by salary caps, clawbacks on the payments they're due through the OHIP system, and the government's refusal to subsidize malpractice insurance for obstetricians. Lately, orthopedic surgeons have threatened a work stop- page Oct. 1 as their displeasure with the government ha grown. : Mr. Wilson said Wednesday after Premier Mike Harris met with OMA officials that some of the savings realized through hospital cutbacks could find their way to doctors.
