The group's itinerary in- cluded trips to Paris, Somme Valley and Arras. The most stirring, howev- er was to Vimy Ridge, which was arranged in ad- vance by Durham MP Alex Shepherd. Gavin Stanley, 15, was another student who found great significance in the trip. "My favorite part was Vimy Ridge because it GUARANTEED INVESTMENT CERTIFICATES * ANNUAL RATES ° made me truly under- stand the sacrifice that my ancestors made for me," sald Gavin, whose great- grandfather lost a leg in the Battle at Vimy Ridge. The local contingent stayed in International Youth Hotels specializing in school groups. They also stayed as billets in people's homes. "It was really education- al, learning about differ- ent cultures," said 17- year-old Lea-Anne Wake- ford. "I recollected every- thing that I was taught in history," added Deanna Latreille, 16. "We also used a lot of french talking to the billets." For the teachers who ac- companied the group, it was gratifying to see the kids putting to use what they've spent months and years learning in the classroom. "It was so exciting to see them get excited about something in Canadian history that I've taught them," explained Mrs. Nancy Hamer-Strahl, a PPHS teacher who took partin the trip. "It was a very worth- while experience," Ms. So- phie Lefebvre, a French teacher at PPHS agreed. "For them to realize that what they are taking in French is useful, really makes them appreciate a second language." The students took along flags and pins donated by the Port Perry Legion and the Mayor's office to share with their hosts. They also brought along CDs given to them by local singers to distribute among the French. Other special donations came from KD graphics.and the student council at PPHS. This was the third trip to France organized by PPHS. Since 1989, the Moderns Department at PPHS has been organizing alternate-year exchange trips to France for stu- dents in the school's french programs. In the same year, students from 'France: return to Port Perry to spend a week in Canada. "We are looking forward to having them come back for a fourth time," said Mrs. Hamer-Strahl.
