"A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 28, 1996 -31 Soccer season's begun Under 17 girls back in the habit with win in Uxbridge After a very long winter and weeks of practice the U-17 girls soccer team was finally back in the habit with their first game of the season on Thursday night. The girls travelled to the Uxbridge Fields to take on their opponents Ux- bridge. The game started with great intensi- ty. After numerous shots on net, great passing and playing, the Physiothera- pist Associutes were soon awarded their first goal of this young season, scored by Amanda Wakeford. The first half soon came to an end with the Physiothera- pists leading 1-0. The team's goal for the second half was to score some more goal for insu- rance. Midway through the second half the girls were awarded a direct kick in the Uxbridge zone. They used it to their advantage and scored their second goal of the game. It was a great shot by our centre defenceman Bonni Norton. The Uxbridge team was able to strike back with a goal of their own but were unable to score anymore. The game end- ed in a 2-1 victory for the Physiothera- pist Associates. The girls would like to thank those parents that came out to support them and would also like to extend an invita- tion to anyone who would like to see them play in their home game Thurs- day, May 30. 4-H Beef Club holds meeting Our second meeting of Durham West Beef 4-H was on May 13 at Brelmar Vet Clinic and Ross Doble Inc.in Sunderland. At the Vet Clinic we were shown the four stom- aches of a cow. Not too many people were im- pressed! We then headed over to Ross Doble Inc. ~ There we watched two mo- vies. Samantha asked us to stand for our 4-H pledge then Amanda read our minutes, which everyone was in favor of. Kelly gave each of us two sheets, one was for a other was for a muffin/ cookie fundraiser. We were told when our next two meetings would be held. We all got pop and a donut, compliments of Mr. Diotte, and then we left. The nine-year-old Port Perry resident won the ti- tle for the nine to 11 age group at the May 25 com- petition in Millersville, Pennsylvania. The inter- national event drew com- petitors from across Cana- da and the United States. The competition in- volved three parts -- a twirling competition rou- tine, show routine and modeling in a party dress or evening gown. The three scores are added to- 'gether for a final tally. Ashley scored first in all three events and was crowned Regional Miss TU Majorette 9-11, Re- gional Parade Majorette 9-11 and Regional Solo Champion 9-11. She brought home three tro- phies, flowers, banners and a $50 United States savings bond for her ac- complishments. . The event is the only National Championship awarded to parade major- ettesin the United States. Last August she placed firstin the up to eight divi- sion in the International event 'in Dayton, Ohio. il Ashley Grncarovski, of Port Perry, was recently named the Regional Miss TU Majorette after taking top honors at an event in Pennsylvania. See story. Her win made her the first Canadian to win a $1,000 United States scholarship for twirling. Ashley has been twirl- ing for six years and has worked diligently towards earning this title. She has travelled to Florida, New York and Pennsylvania to compete in compeitions. The Grade 4 student at R. H. Cornish Public School is a member of the Dynamics baton corps of Ajax, where she practices under the tutlege of in- = structor Karyn McKillen.
