All they needed were a couple of timely hits. The Legionnaires first game was on May 22, in Pickering. Port got off to a good start as they quickly built up a 3-0 lead in their first at bat of the game. Pickering not to be outdone did the same in the bottom of the first inning to tie things up at three apiece. After Port went scoreless in the second inning Pickering grabbed a 6-3 lead in the home half. Not to be outdone the Le- gionnaires fought back and again tied the game up at six apiece with another three run inning in the third. The score stayed this way until the bottom of the fourth when Pickering picked up four more runs to take a 10-6 lead. The Le- gionnaires are a gritty bunch however, and they once again fought back to re- take the lead as they pushed across five runs in the top of the fifth inning. With the score now 11 - 10 in the Le- gionnaires favor they tried to hang on but just failed as Pickering picked up two runs in their half of the inning to take the game 12 - 11. Geoff Grieveson and Shane Jeffery shared the pitching duties this game and both did a fine job. Hitting for the Legionnaires in this game were: Shane Jeffery with a single and a walk, Shannon Deering, Luke Pil- key and Geoff Grieveson each with a single and two walks, Mike Lycett with Legionnaires play a pair a single, Kyle Bannon and Brent Wagg had a walk each while Josh Kendell, Andrew Hill and Lucas Fraser had two walks each. The Legionnaires next game was at home on Thursday, May 23 as they took on the Willowdale Bruins. This game was quite a pitching duel as Geoff Grieveson of the Legionnaires was on the mound and putting in a strong per- formance for the hometown crowd as he went the distance putting in a good per- formance. After three innings Willow- dale held onto a slim 2-0 lead but in the top of the fourth they picked up three more runs to take a 5-0 lead. In the bot- tom of the fourth Geoff got his team back into the game as with two on he smacked a line drive into the gap and hustled around the bases to pick up the teams' first home run of the year. Willowdale managed to pick up an- other two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-3 lead that would be the final in this one. The Legionnaires had the bas- es loaded twice and two on base once but just couldn't find that one hit need- ed to drive in those base runners. Hitting for the Legionnaires were Shane Jeffery with a single and two walks, Mike Lycett with a single and a walk, Shannon Deering with a single, Geoff Grieveson with a home run and a walk, Lucas Fraser picked up two walks and Keith Forbes, Andrew Hill and Kyle Bannon had a walk each. The Legionnaires next game is on the road in Vaughan on Wednesday and no home game next week. Their season opened at home against Peterbo- rough and some last in- ning hits and errors gave Peterborough a 5-3 win de- spite the fact the MoJacks led the game 3-1 until the seventh. Tim Jones led the offense with two singles and a walk. Sean Jeffrey had a single and a walk. Aaron Lycett and Matt Skerratt each had singles. Chris Monsma had three free passes with Cory McQuade getting one walk. Mike Wiseman laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt. Tim Jones pitched, recording five hits, three walks and 11 strikeouts. In the first game, they played Toronto Chick 'N Deli, and won 6 - 4. In the second game, Port beat the Sim- coe Juniors 8 - 3.
