2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 14, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Donations can help send disabled kids to camp By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Advocates for children with disabilities are appealing to the community for funds that will help kids attend summer camps this year. Donna Herold and Heather Haliburton-Smith of the Northern Durham Family Network, which represents parents of children with special needs, are hoping local organi- zations including sports teams, parks boards, and businesses will pitch in to help cover the costs of support workers that are required by exceptional children. The kids' families are able to pay tor registration at sum- mer camps run by the town- ship, the YMCA and local churches, but the cost for sup- ort staff -- it's as much as $560 a week -- can put the camp experience out of reach, said Mrs. Haliburton-Smith. " "People don't realize this is the case," she said. "They don't realize these kids don't have an option. "They have a right to go, like anyone else." The Network sent a proposal to Scugog Township's recre- ation committee, seeking fund- ing for the counselors needed to allow the kids to attend camp this year. While members saw \ merit in the proposal, they had to turn it down because the funds simply aren't available. The service was provided last year by funds sent to the Central Seven Association for Community Living, and 15 kids were able to go to camp. But this year that funding has dried up as well. When word of the situation got around, a member of the park board in Seagrave took it to a meeting. The Seagrave board responded with enough funding to allow two weeks' worth of counselling at a local camp. That gesture got the two women thinking that other groups in Sgugog might be will- ing to help FX as well. Mrs. Herold said such actions are a response to advice by the provincial government, ich has said communities will have to pitch in to help their own in light of cutbacks in social spending. "There are no other options," said Mrs. Herold. "Hopefully there are organi- zations out there who are not aware (of the necessity for funding) who have funds," she added. The women realize it's unlikely enough money will be raised to send all the kids with special needs to camp this sum- mer. So they will place the names put forward to them in a hat and choose as many as can be funded. Mrs. Herold . Stressed that all families with special needs kids are eligible, not just members of the family network. She added that there is a need for quick action, as regis- tration for many camps begins later this month. The funding could provide respite for families -- who often see one parent devoting full- time care -- and some special times for the children.
