Clear lawn before starting to cut By Ellen Henke John Deere Lawn and Garden Expert Seen any UFOs lately? I'm taking about "Unwant- ed Flying Objects"--branch- es, twigs, stones, pine cones, tools or toys that could be potential mowing and safety hazards. By taking a few extra minutes to survey your lawn and remove any UFOs, you could save an expensive trip to a dealer- ship or repair shop or, worse yet, a visit to the doctor. If twigs, leaves or other debris clog your mower's discharge chute, turn off your mower immediately. Regardless of your ter- rain, always keep family members, especially child- ren, far away from the area you're mowing to protect them from UFOs. Never take passengers on a riding mower--and never allow children to operate mowers. Be particularly careful when backing up with rid- ing or walk-behind mowers. So the next time your neighbours see you clear- ing debris off the yard, tell them you're looking for UFOs. You may get a funny look, but remind yourself that safety, yours and your family's, comes first. Constant battle to control crabgrass If you're one of those homeowners who gets grumpy about crabgrass, you have plenty of company. More than five million households in North American that don't hire a professional lawn care ser- vice have had crabgrass in. the past two years. Because crabgrass con- tinually emerges through- out spring and summer, homeowners who don't use a weed preventer may fight a constant battle with the grassy weed all season long. Eliminating crabgrass after it's grown can require many applications of a post-emergent herbicide which must be timed cor- rectly. To avoid hassling with crabgrass this year, use a weed preventer that stops it from ever emerging. Most long experts rec- ommend a product contain- ing Team herbicide, which requires only one spring- time application for sum- mer-long control. It's best to apply this grassy weed preventer in early spring, generally when soil temperature is between 52 and 55 degrees.
