Both Buzz Hargrove, CAW union president and CAW secretary-treasurer Jim: O'Neil were to ad- dress the demonstrators, along with Local 222 rep- resentatives. The demonstration came as a result of an an- nouncement that GM plans to sell its fabrication plant. The sale of the plant would leave the fate of some 2,200 employees up in the air. A further an- nouncement regarding the Windsor trim plant would affect a further 1,500 jobs. The fact that the compa- ny made record profits last year -- $1.4 million -- and then made this an- nouncement angered its union members, who say they will not sit idly by and watch their jobs out- sourced. Word came down last week that the Ministry of Transportation has cut the service in Port, which allowed new drivers and seniors to take road tests every other Tuesday. That means those wanting to get their licences will have to travel to another office, said Marg White, at the licence bureau on Water St. in Port. "There will be no more testing in Port Perry," she said. "They'll have to go to Oshawa, Lindsay or Aurora if they want to be tested." Mrs. White said the Port office didn't play a role in the testing here. MTO officials travelled to Port every other week from Oshawa to test student drivers, and seniors over 80, who must be tested every year. Other area "travel point" testing centres being discontinued by the ministry are Beaverton and Port Hope. The number for the Driver Examination Centre in Oshawa is 728-7616.
