Lape "A Family Tradition for 130 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 23, 1996 -17 Scugog trees 'on last legs' Project workers hope to plant for the future By Mary Sanchez Port Perry Star "The trees in Scugog are on their last legs," says Art Murcott. The Ashburn man is donating his time in assisting Scugog Township council with a tree planting project. The township- endorsed project has been going on for several years ur. der the guidance of Joan Graham" in Cartwright. Council, Mrs. Graham and Mr. Murcott hope to get residents' support by encouraging them to pur- chase trees and plant them on township prop- erty to replace the aging trees. The trees can be pur- chased for only $12 each at the Uxbridge West Garden Centre, west of Highway 12, two miles north of Brooklin. Available are sugar and Norway maples, green ash and lynden. You can phone ahead or pick them up between nine and five, seven days a week. The number is (905) 655-1074. Itis not just adults that can be involved in the beautification project. Yesterday, Mr. Murcott payed a visit to R.H. Cornish Public School, where he gave kids seedlings so that they too can become involved. Mr. Murcott stresses that this is "not a one- year project. There are long-term plans that we are working on." And why exactly is this project so important for the community? "Not only is it the envi- ronmentally correct thing to do, but I think that there is nothing more beautiful to people coming into the area than seeing all of these trees." Building officials 'got der the mistaken impression that only the upper level, near the roof, would be painted green, which they did not object to. "I don't think they caught that the wall was going to be painted green, because they probably never imagined that someone would paint over brick," Councillor Pearce said. She called the incident "unfortunate" in light of the fact that the township has site plan controls in place which can allow the township to control the colors that are used. It also comes at a bad time when council is cur- rently dealing with IPCF, the owners of the former Con- way property, to ensure its new grocery store is designed to fit in with the community, something IPCF is tyring hard to do, she said. : caught', Pearce says "The building department, like us, were caught by sur- prise when the tarp came off," she said. Council is extremely concerned with the mistake, but Councillor Pearce said nothing can be done. "It was a mistake, we all make them. It was simply missed, " she said. Because the color passed through the site plan con- trols there is nothing that can be done. "I'm angry about it. Why the landlord would give per- mission to paint the brick I don't know, but if it is to be changed it would have to be voluntary (by the cwner)," she said. If the store remains as is Councillor Pearce said it is something we will just have tolive with it. "The township is in error here. We all got caught," she said. / love of fishing?
