1 co PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 23, 1996 - 11 Mary Volmer (left) and Bunty Webb as the two aging sisters in Gone to Glory, presented recently by Scugog's Borelians. The performance earned 'the two a THEA for dramatic roles at ACTCO awards last weekend. Mrs. Webb received a ~ second award for her comic turn in 7 Stories. Borelians' Bunty wins 2 awards - By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The awards just keep on coming for Scugog's Bore- lians. The local theatre group saw its members receive two THEA prizes and a nomination for another at the annual Association of Community Theatres Central Ontario (ACTCO) awards night last week- end. Scugog Island's Bunty Webb was the star of the night, capturing a THEA for best comic actress in a supporting role, and shar- ing another for her dra- matic collaboration with Oshawa's Mary Volmer. And Dave Ellis was nominated for best direc- tor for his job in guiding the cast of 7 Stories, which was staged at Port Perry's Town Hall 1873 theatre this winter. Mrs. Webb, who's well- known for her amateur theatre work locally as well as appearances on tel- evision and film, received her seventh award at the ACTCO ceremonies last Saturday. She's received many more nominations during her 50 years of in- volvement in amateur theatre, but said last week that doesn't detract from the thrill of the recogni- tion. "I think they're wonder- ful," she said of the awards, which are handed out by ACTCO based on the recommendations of adjudicators who take in performances throughout the province. Mrs. Webb was quick to point out, however, that the real judges of the Bore- lians' work continue to be the people of Scugog, who sit in the audience each night. "What we always say is (the adjudication) is only one man's opinion," said Mrs. Webb. "What we real- ly go by is the reaction of our audience." Mrs. Webb received a THEA for her comic turn in 7 Stories, staged here this past winter. In the supporting role she played a 100-year-old shut-in who passes the time of day with a man who is stand- ing on a window ledge, contemplating suicide. She shared in the sec- ond prize with Mary Volm- er, her co-star in Gone to Glory, mounted last fall. They played a pair of ag- ing sisters. Adjudicator Paul Eck praised the two highly, recognizing them for "a performance which de- pended totally on two ac- "tors to trust, support, live and die as part of each oth- er. This was a perfor- ° mance which allowed a play to breathe, and an au- dience to be truly moved." That's high praise, and an indication to the people of Scugog that something good is occurring on the lo- cal theatre scene, said Mrs. Webb. The job of the local thea- tre group is to provide the community alternative entertainment, she said. "A drama group brings them something different. I feel The Borelians have done that over the years. "I feel with everything we've done, we've given them something to think about." Mrs. Webb, who's been very busy of late working on local productions, tele- vision commercials and films, said she's taking a break for the summer and "restingon my laurels. "I'm just going to relax and do nothing," she mused.
