For the afternoon meet- ing of March 13 Dorothy Butson and Helen Thom- son greeted the members. The guest speaker, Mr. Glen Taylor, from Central Seven outlined the goals and programs of this spe- cialized community group. In keeping with Saint Pat- rick's Day several Irish songs were sung with Car- ol Edgar at the piano. On March 27 Clem and Marg Jeffrey welcomed all diners to the Easter Pot Luck Supper. When each month has a variety of popular choices like this, seniors have a wonderful opportunity to see the world. On Saturday, March 16 at the Latcham Centre, the Port Perry Seniors in cooperation with Scugog Community Care held a Free Income Tax Clinic for eligible taxpayers. Doro- thy Imperial, Administra- tor of Community Care, coordinated the program. Volunteers who assisted were: Cathy Brown from Revenue Canada, Dave Bishop, Lena Eenling, George and Eileen Hern, Stan and Muriel Rickard, Valerie Tapper and John Wallout. All the volun- teers were kept busy for the day by completing the A tax forms which were brought in. Some of these volunteers continue to help Community Care with this project in the succeeding days until April 30. When they completed the Driver Refresher Course of the "55 Alive Program" 30 seniors re- ceived certificates which were issued by the Canada Safety Council. The grad- uates of this program studied Canada's most comprehensive driver im- provement course specifi- cally designed for mature drivers. This course as- sists senior Canadians to achieve a life of indepen- dence, dignity and pur- pose. The second class be- gan on March 27 and will continue once a week to end on April 17. The choir was pleased to have the leader. Edna Beckett, back after a brief illness. To celebrate her return and to honor Dwight Wilson's 95th birthday a special choir party was held for them on March 20. There was an abundance of cake, ice cream, good wishes, hugs and kisses! The competition and the skill level of the shuftle- board players keep climb- ing. The high weekly scores for March were: March 4 - 185 points for Grace Bassant and Stan Rickard. March 11 - 180 points for Helen Thomson and Stan Rickard. March 18 - 197 points for Gwen Crawford and Willa Holt- by. March 25 - 223 points for Helen Thomson and Lloyd Wakeford. This win- ter session will conclude on April 29 and the sum- mer session will begin ¢ on May 13. Drug talk planned Mr. Farquharson, a ge- ography teacher at Port Perry High School, along with the members of the school community council have organized a drug and substance abuse meeting to take place on Wednes- day April 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the library of the high school. The topic of drugs and substance abuse was moti- vated by a few students in the high school because of their concern that it is "an ongoing problem," said Farquharson. "The purpose of the meeting is so that parents can be informed." At the meeting an R.C.M.P constable will be present to discuss many of the issues and problems that are facing our schools and young people today. There will be a discus- sion of the issues as well as a chance for parents, stu- dents, teachers and mem- bers of the community to ask questions, become more informed and share ideas on this extremely important topic.
