GOLDEN COMMISSION REPORT The Council of the Township of Scugog unanimously opposes the imposition of the reform of local government as suggested in the Golden Report. This Council is opposed to the massive tax increases which will flow from the Report to Rural Municipalities, as well as the loss of representation from those. PLEASE RETURN NO LATER THAN NOON, MARCH 29, 1996 IGA Jrs. league champs The scene was set Sunday for a very exciting end to ringette league play. Port had earned a berth in the champi- onship game by defeating Ajax and now met their opponents from Markham. Port had their ups and downs with this team and this game proved no different. The girls knew what they had to do and came out ready for the win. Markham opened up the scoring and took a two goal lead midway through the first . Port's Janine Hammond answered back to tie the game with assists to Jen Elliot, two and Janna Senyk and Kath- leen Rojas picking up singles. Mark- ham slipped two quick ones by Port's Jen Donnelly before the buzzer went to end the period. . Second period action was fast and fu- rious with Jen Elliott closing the gip to one, teaming up with Janine and Janna to beat the Markham netminder. With- in 30 seconds Markham scored but Ja- nine and Janna again attacked the end zone and narrowed the score to one. With the period winding down Port applied the pressure and once again Ja- nine found the spot assisted by Lisa Le- Fort tying the game 5-5. Kathleen lit up the board once more for Port Perry and gave the home team the goal advantage with only three minutes remaining. Markham was getting worried call- ing a time out to discuss their strategy. Unfortunately Port picked up two pen- alties in the last two minutes which al- | lowed Markham to play five on three. Port's offence and defence held off their opponents until the 41 second mark when Markham tied the game forcing overtime. With Port shorthanded the clock was set for 15 minutes of sudden death over- time. The girls rallied together and played like the champions they are. Their passes were right on, their de- fence was stronger than ever and Jen was exceptional between the pipes! Port took command of the play and with only three minutes played in over- time Janine passed to Lisa LeFort who wrapped around the net and made no mistake as she popped that donut be- tween the legs of the netminder making the IGA Junior Girls the League Cham- pions for the 1995-96 season!! Throughout the season this team has been faced with many changes and all the girls deserve so much credit. Many had never played on the same team. Jen Donnelly who played forward last year was being transplanted and trans- formed into a super goaltender, we lost a few girls midway through the season due to work and other obligations, and fortunately acquired Bonnie-Jo who has been a definite asset on defence just to mention a few things. A lot of credit has to go to Lisa Cooper, Steve Holt and Fernando Rojas for not only being a su- per coaching team but for all the count- less hours they have so freely given. Thank you to the parents of these wonderful young ladies who make sure they are always at the rink on time and drive them all over the countryside to play the game they love so much. Con- gratulations to all the girls as Port moves into the Regional Champion- ships being held over the Easter week- end in Oakwood, Lindsay and Sunder- land. Good luck my little angels!! Swampers top Bruins 3-2 The first game of the - league final was an excit- ing overtime match with the Homelife Swampers coming out on top of a 3-2 score over the Brooklin Bruins. The opening period went scoreless with the Bruins holding a slight edge in scoring opportuni- ties with Keith Tremblay in the Swamp net coming up with a couple of out- standing stops on close in shots from Roger Rouselle .and Nick Attwood. At the start of the second half the Swampers pulled out in front first with Mike Butt faking a pass to Mike Mole and in keeping the ball surprising goaler Jim Raaphorst with his flip shot to the near side. Brooklin got even just a few short minutes later with Rouselle blasting in a shot off the leg of defender Mike Healy. In the dying minutes Brooklin looked like they were going to pull ahead at any given moment, but the TJ VINYL SIDING hl T-3 white per sq. (approx. 100 sq. ft.) ALSO ... Right after that the Swampers stomped' down ice on a three on one only to miss their finest opportunity. At the end of regulation time both teams were deadlocked at one apiece. In the total goals over- time, Brooklin came out first with Wayne Tate put- ting one in the empty net. He was followed in quick succession from the ensu- ing faceoff by Brian Pome- roy from Dan Taylor to draw the Swamp even again. With less than a minute showing on the clock, Taylor fed Brian Robinson off the side of the crease for the eventual winner. The second game of this best of three series goes at 3:30 next Sunday at the lo- cal arena. In Sunday's other game the Framers Gallery blanked the Stouffville Scorpions 2-0 with Tyler Renaud counting both goals. Cory Dowson and Steve Kristensen were awarded assists while Brent Rainey was given credit for the shutout.
