20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 12, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" ---- Sr J&OTEY MN 81 DI LILIES TY PAVE ORTS Local teen competes in national ski competition By Mary Sanchez Port Perry Star A local athlete has re- turned from a national skiing competition in Brit- ish Columbia, and is now setting his sights on a meet in Northern Ontario. Iain Maclean, a 17- year-old Seagrave resi- dent, represented repre- sented Ontario in the Na- tional Junior Cross Country Ski Finals. He travelled with the Ontario team, his coach and three members of Fit- Company Ski Club. They departed on Feb. 25 and returned on March 4. The Seagrave teen placed in 31st for the sev- en and a half km race, 25th for the 10 km Classic and 11th for the 15 km skate. His team came in seventh place in the relay. Iain described the course that he skied in the Northern Interior of B.C. as "really tough". Although the schedule was very hectic - "either skiing or racing every day with four races in six days" -he admitted that it was a great experience and that he had a lot of fun. In order to prepare for such an important compe- tition, Iain admitted that he practiced every day. He began his preparation last May by jogging, cycling and roller skiing (skiis - with wheels). Although the season is officially over, Iain is ski- ing in the Northern Onta- rio Spring Series this week. This includes five races in Timmins, North Bay and Temiskaming. [ain admitted that he is just going to the series "to have a good time". Currently in Grade 12 at PPHS, he has been cross country skiing since Grade 9 when he became a member of the school team. Before then, Iain had only skied around his home in Seagrave. When asked about his future plans, he replied "I'd like to keep on skiing and qualify to go to the Nationals next year in Newfoundland and see where it takes me. I'd like to go as far as I can with skiing and have a good time." But, . from now until May, lain says that he is just going to "rest up and have some fun." lain MacLean, 17, of Seagrave, recently competed in a national cross-country skiing competition in British Columbia. And during the March Break, he's off to Northern Ontario for another event. He trains non-stop for his event, and hopes some day to represent Canada at the Olympics. | Juvenile team advances to the All-Ontario finals Seniors in OFSAA playdowns Local hockey's not quite done yet! Port's Juvenile team, sponsored by Joe's Pizza and Rick Trotter Excavat- ing, have qualified for the 'OMHA Juvenile A finals and are awaiting the win- ner between Sutton and Mooretown. The best of five series is now tied at two games apiece, with the next game in Moore- town on Saturday. Other on-ice activities include the annual House Leage tournaments that are going on this week, the novice rep tournament that is scheduled for Sat- urday the 23rd, the House League championships that go Saturday the 30th. All events are at the Scu- gog Arena. Most people who have been around the rink this season are aware that Port's "Rep" teams were moved up a classification this year from "BB" to "A". As a consequence of this, the "Additional Entry" teams also were bumped up into a grouping that in- cluded teams from both "A" and "AA" centres. While none of the Rep teams except the Juvies were champions within the Lakeshore League, most were relatively com- petitive at A level and should benefit from the ex- perience next season. The Additional Entry teams, however, ran into pretty heavy competition in their playdowns, with four of them meeting Belleville, a AA centre of some 40,000 population. PPMH will be requesting the Ontario Minor Hockey Association to review this situation prior to next year. Off-ice, the two major events to come are the an- nual awards presenta- tions, to take place Satur- day afternoon, April 27 in the new hall at the Com- munity Centre, and the Annual General Meeting Turnto Page 22 Ringette tourney action This past weekend two Port Perry teams travelled to Barrie's popular and annual tournament. Forty-seven teams were involved, the participants ages varying from five to 18. That's over 500 participants. Ringette is alive and well and a new touch this weekend was to see boys playing on several of the teams with great enthusiasm. Our IGA team initiated the Junior B division on Friday night as they faced off against the host Barrie team, small in number, but disciplined and eager to please their hometown supporters. This is a game that will be long- remembered by the Port Perry contin- gent and it ended in an important 2-2 tie. Jennifer Donnelly, our steadfast goaltender made her mark as we cheered on her strong efforts in this game. The Barrie shooters are quick and usually close to the mark, so she was well tested and rose to the occasion, pleasing fans and teammates alike. Good passing and effective positional play was key to this game. Janine Ham- mond scored, unassisted, and Brooke Shanley notched one from Kathleen Ro- jas. Hats off to our coaching staff as this game was a difficult one to maintain control of, but that they did. Game two: Saturday morning and the IGA Juniors were anxious to meet up with the team from St. Thomas, On- tario. Port Perry dominated this team and the score ended up in their favor 6- 3. Kathleen Rojas netted three in this game as she demonstrated her skating skills, picking up the timely passes from Janine Hammond and Jennifer Elliot. Leanne Holt raised the ring past the St. Thomas goalie also, as Lisa Le- Fort and Amy Wilson, assisted her goal. Bonni-Jo Norton scored twice, capital- izing on a sharp pass from Lisa LeFort, and once unassisted, after being tack- led but unbowed with the ring still within her reach. Game three: Saturday evening the Port Perry girls gathered again at Bar- rie's Allendale Complex to go against an Elora/Fergus team, who also had a good showing against the competition. Port Perry's Juniors dominated this game, but the opposition never let up the pres- sure. We sure were pleased with the play Amy picked up on to score that memorable goal. Way to play heads up ringette! Again, Jennifer Donnelly was outstanding, which made her defense work ever harder with her. Cathy Coop- er and Bonni-Jo Norton worked the ice effectively throughout both periods. Fi- nal: 7-3 for the IGA Juniors. Game four: Sunday morning. No one was walking away with any lead by Sat- urday's end so Port's girls checked the standings to evaluate their chances. It all depended upon the Sunday morning game, even though our juniors had not yet lost a game in this Barrie tourna- ment. The game against Hagersville would be most easily decided if they went for the win. As the game unfolded, the fans hearts were in their throats as fatigue seemed to have settled in. Stick-checking and heads-up passing became very impor- tant as the whole team realized that they needed each other. Port's ringette team, came away with a4-2winover Hagersville. Championship game: It was to be the host team versus our own Port Perry Juniors and the girls were ready for rin- gette. Barrie scored first, second and third, leaving our team on the defen- sive. Jennifer Donnelly was up to the task and our defense had to dig down and undermine the oppositions plan. Brooke Shanley started off our rebound with a power play goal that whistled past the Barrie goalie's shoulder! Next, Janine scored on a breakaway that was called back, so she rebooted and netted another. First period and we were down 4-2. Power play goals were very impor- tant to this game for both teams. Cathy Cooperinitiated the play deep in the de- fensive zone with a pass to Lisa LeFort, then to Leanne Holt who tied the game and really changed what Barrie thought was a foregone conclusion! Great comeback, girls! However, Barrie then took advan- tage of their own power play to take the lead again and Port Perry's defensive teams planned strategy. Janna Senyk set up plays that netted key markers from Kathleen Rojas and Jennifer Elli- ot to put this game away for a gold med- al win 7-5. Special mention must be made of the extra stick-checking efforts in this game by Jennifer Elliot, Cathy Cooper and Leanne Holt. The Port Perry IGA Junior B team has had two away tour- naments and they have not lost a game. In fact, they have won gold medals both times. Our hats go off to you. Good luck in your upcoming playoffs girls. The Senior Boys basket- ball team from Port Perry High School met up with some stiff competition at the All Ontario tourna- ment held recently in Belleville. PPHS played last year's champions from Timmins in the first match on March 6 and kept the game close through the first quarter, with a score of 14-9. The second quar- ter was disasterous for Port resulting in the Rebels trailing 37-16 at half-time. In the second half the Rebels played even with the Timmins squad, but lost the match by a final 63-38 score. Andy Mitchell led the scoring for the Rebels in this match with 15 points. Matt Brown and Ryan Williamson had five points each, Gary Norton three and twoeach went to Mike Smith, Kevin Pike, Jay Fletcher and Sean Roncetti. In the next match, sud- den death for both teams, the Rebels, ranked 14th out of the 16 competing teams, played a much stronger game against the third ranked Barrie Innis- dale team. Once again, one bad quarter of play left the Rebels behind, los- ing 20-7 after one quarter. The team never let up for the rest of the game, winning each of the re- maining quarters, but los- ing the match 61-52. Once again Andy Mitchell led the Rebels in scoring with 11, while Matt Brown and Ryan Williamson had nine each. Gary Norton netted seven points, Jay Fletcher five and Mike Smith and Kevin Pike four each. Glen Espie, Sal Alonzi and Chris Arnold other members of the team, missed the OFSAA finals due to a commitment to play with the PPHS rugby team currently touring Wales. ) TE TATE BE, or I v= PT. TT
