10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 12, 1996 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" : JEFF MITCHELL/PORT PERRY STAR LUBE MAN AT WORK: Russ Anthony has opened his Lube Man shop at the Olco station on Hwy. 7A, near the intersection with Simcoe, in Port Perry. He offers a host of services, including a lube, oil and filter deal, interior cleaning and complete spring cleaning, undercoating, and minor repairs and exhaust work. He opened his shop at the beginning of the month. MPP, union rep both say they favor negotiations By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star As Ontario's public service strike enters its third week, both sides claim willingness to go back to the negotiating table; but the gulf between the govern- ment and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) appears to be as wide as the day the dispute began. "We want to get back to the table, and we're telling that the the govern- ment," Joan Gates, vice-president of OPSEU's Region 3 in Durham Region said Friday from a picket line in Oshawa. Some 3,000 OPSEU workers in Durham are on strike, and trying to keep up morale in the face of cold days on the line and a hard line position taken by the government, said Ms Gates. OPSEU is asking the govern- ment to consider cost-cutting alterna- tives to massive layoffs, which will affect at least 13,000 public sector workers, maybe many more. They also want a better deal for those workers who are forced out by government downsizing. The union has sent to the govern- ment a 30-point plan to cut costs, including suggestions on eliminating waste within offices and reducing spending on items such as travel, print- ing, and other payments. "We're certainly willing to talk about things," said Ms Gates. © O'TOOLE "Our intent is to get a decent settle- ment, a settlement people can live with, and a settlement we can negoti- ate." But Durham East MPP John O'Toole says the government has gone as far as it can in softening the blow of down- sizing for OPSEU workers. me In an interview from his Queen's Park office { last week, he said the '1 government's offer to the union is all the province can afford as it embarks on an agen- da of cost-cutting and deficit reduction. "How much can the "people of Ontario afford in taxes when they can't even afford their municipal taxes?" he asked. "In this climate, how can we possibly bor- row more money from the future to pay for today's problems?" He said the government's offer to the union is fair and balanced, and reflects the responsibilities of all sectors in an era where government spending cuts affect all Ontarians. He added the union's demands don't take into account the tough times that are present. "There's a price to be paid by every- one," said Mr. O'Toole. ~~ JACKSON WATER CONDITIONING Over 20 years experience In Water Treatment 1-800-721-4921 (705) 439-2589 Sales * Service * Rentals Softeners © Filters * Chlorination Ultra Violet * Reverse Osmosis * Distillers Service to All Makes pa (EVIC i, Dental Care Jor the whole family ENTAR e DR.
