PY 20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 19, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" SPORTS ModJacks win From Page 19 "That's what Paul did tor us. Leslie notched the only goal of the middle frame, stuffing the puck behind Merchants' goalie Ryan West at the corner of the goal. Still, the Merchants pressed during the early stages of the third. Their ability to break out quick- ly and adapt to a nifty slice of versatility when taking control kept ModJacks on ®- their heels in certain in- < ! an stances. Craig McGill tied the score before Ryan Ridg- way and Mike Pigeau gave Port Perry a two-goal bulge. Purdy, with his second of the night, closed the gap for Little Britain. Howev- er, Leslie slid the puck into the empty goal with five seconds left on the clock, giving the MoJacks a positive result on their final home game prior to Christmas. Modacks gained an ear- ly Christmas present when native Port Perry- ite Corey Bricknell walked into the dressing room. He suited up for ModJacks for the two games against Lit- tle Britain and is expected to remain for the duration. Bricknell played in the East Coast Hockev =: [3 ooo 138 -. Marzipan figures at: CHOCOIATE iL ay League (KCHL), first in Huntington, followed by a trade to Columbus Chill. He grew weary of the busi- ness elements of profes- sional hockey and lonely for friends. "l was getting regular ice time," offered the 20- year-old defenceman, "but it was no fun. I was the en- forcer. I was told to keep them honest. But when the International and American leagues ; cut back to nine (callups), I knew there was no chance for me. So, I wasn't excited about playing there any- more. | prefer to be in Port Perry and playing with guys I grew up with." Bricknell left Columbus on good terms with coach Moe Mantha. "He knows what it's all about having been an eighth or ninth de- fenceman himself," said Bricknell. "He wished me luck and left the door open." Bricknell collected four minor penalties on Sun- day and a 10 minute mis- conduct with 2:27 left to be played. WALLY WORLD - Todd Dennis and Steve Bark- well were the Modack scorers in Little Britain. Tim Teel had all three goals for the Merchants, two on the power play...Though it's true the league is very competitive from top to bottom, it is also true the Little Britain Merchants are the most entertaining to watch...MoJacks are in Uxbridge Friday night and between Christmas and New Year's, they play four games in as many nights. They will play a home-and-home series with eastern Ontario's Picton Pirates, beginning Wednesday, Dec. 27 at Scugog Arena (8:30 p.m.). (Originally scheduled for Dec. 28). They are in Pic- ton one night later. Forder-Parks Insurance Brokers Inc. This game was excit- ing from the drop of the puck. Oshawa took charge ear- ly as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead but Port finally got on the board as Casey Van Schagen scored assisted by Derek Tindall and Scott Jeffrey. In the second Port took their turn to control the game as they stormed the Oshawa net on every shift. Their efforts were rewarded with two goals for a 3-2 lead after two periods. Adam Hobbs started things roll- ing as he scored assisted by Scott Jeffrey and Glenn McCready. Dave Gainey gave Port the go ahead goal with the assists going to Dillan Weber and Troy Camp- bell. The third was all Oshawa as they scored four unan- swered goals for a 6-3 win. Mike McLennan drew the assignment between the pipes for this game and cer- tainly had his work cut out for him! Up next for the Country Style Bantams was their home tournament on Dec. 16. In their first game they were to battle it out once again with the Oshawa Black Hawks. Although it was an early game these two teams put on an exciting game that went end to end from start to finish. Port was all over the Black Hawks early into the game but were constantly being stoned by the Oshawa goalie. Finally a shot re-directed by Adam Hobbs, got by the Oshawa goalie for a 1-0 lead for Port after one period. Derek Tindall and Scott Jeffrey picked up the assists on the goal. In the second Oshawa worked their way back into the game as they scored to tie the game at one. It proved to be a real nailbiter in the third period as both teams fought hard to get the go ahead goal. Port proved to be that lucky team as another tip in from Derek Tindall was enough to give Port Perry that 2-1 win. Dillan Weber and Casey Van Schagen picked up the assists on the winning goal. Ryan Fraser picked up the win, as he played a solid game in net for Port Perry. Up next for Port was a game against Lindsay to see who would go through to the championship round. Un- fortunately for Port Perry, their luck ran out as Lind- say won this important one 2-1. Thesé Country Style Donut Bantams have been running into hot goalies for the past two to three weeks and although the chances are happening the puck isn't goingin. Adam Hobbs scored the lone goal for Port in the third period, as he got the chance for a breakaway af- ter being fed the puck from teammates Scott Jeffrey and Scott Harper. However, much to the players and fans dismay, Lindsay scored late in the period to cap- ture the win. It had been quite a match-up which real- ly had the crowds going. The tournament was once again well run by Richie LeFort. Abig thank you goes to him for his efforts. Also thanks go to the Port Perry ModJacks for the use of their dressing room, the boys really appreciated it. The players would like to thank all of the parents for their efforts in the bake sale and the raffle draw. The raffle draw was successful owing to everyone's hard work and in particular Mary Van Schagen's hustle and drive in selling a great many tickets...way to go Mary! And well done parents...a great team effort! Last but not least the team and parents would like to express their gratitude to our sponsor Ken Carruthers of the Country Style Donuts in Manchester. His con- tinued support and generosity towards the team goes above and beyond. Thanks Ken.
