"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 12, 1995 - 5 JEFF MITCHELLUPORT PERRY STAR TRADITION CONTINUES: Employees at Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens continued a Christmas-time tradition last week, when they donated $1,640 to the local Big Brothers Association. For almost 20 years employees raised funds and had their donation matched by owner Ken Jackson, and the tradition was carried on this year, despite Mr. Jackson's recent death. Here, Big Brothers executive director Patti Goreski accepts a cheque from employees Elsie Perrault and Maureen Dodd. 156 units collected at blood clinic A blood donor clinic held in Port Perry last week was a resounding success, say organizers. Bill Henshall said the clinic, held at the Masonic Lodge on Queen St. last Wednesday (Dec. 6), saw 156 units of blood collect- ed, right on target with Red Cross estimates for the area. The clinic was stream- lined so it was easier and quicker for folks to make their donations, said Mr. Henshall. "We had a lot of compli- ments on it because a lot of people got through in about 35 minutes," he said. "There was no delay at all." Organizers haven't set a date for the next Port clin- ic, but it's hoped it will be held in March. COA Me Ab SARA RENE LRL OL IL oll ha KRCA staff laid off Provincial cutbacks blamed for crippling cuts to local agency By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star The Kawartha Region Conservation Authority has laid off all but two of its staff members in the wake of the provincial eco- nomic statement. Although the authority's chair said the KRCA is not looking to dissolve the au- thority, officials must come up with a plan of action as they head into January with no funding. "We are not considering dissolving the authority. That may be what some provin- cial bureaucrats and politicians want, but conservation is too important for future _-generations to throw away. We will keep our charter no matter what," said authori- ty chair Wayne Hutchinson. "The province may have abandoned the environment, but we have not." Funding to the authority has been se- verely reduced and restricted to the opera- tion of flood control structures. It will cur- tail conservation programming across the Kawartha Region Watershed, according to the authority. The board met last week and as an in- terim measure have laid off eight employ- ees until the end of January, 1996. The au- thority plans to use the time to review alternatives and develop ways and means by which tooperate. Although the loss of jobs is tough to deal with, the biggest hurt of all is the prospect of losing conservation and resource man- agement at the local community and wa- tershed level, said Ian McNab, general manager. Scugog Ward 3 Councillor Ken Gads- den, a member of the authority board, is worried about the future of conservation with no funds available to monitor the wetlands. "It's scary. The authority was fulfilling a function. We're talking about land and water here. And, if you let those things go, how do you get them back?" he said. Without the Kawartha Region Conser- vation Authority, Scugog would be on its own for a planned water quality study of Lake Scugog. Councillor Gadsden said the study will be performed by volunteers, but the lead- ing agency would be out of the picture. "They were to provide the expertise in this study," he said. A final decision on the future of the au- thority will be made at the annual meet- ingtobe held in January. Jo 7.N VI], CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!
