2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 12, 1995 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Liberals, NDP held legislature hostage, MPP says O'Toole calls opposition tactics slap in the face of democracy' Durham East's MPP was not amused by opposition shenanigans at Queen's Park last week. In fact, John O'Toole called the tactics employed by the Liberal and NDP parties to block Bill 26 "A slap in the face of democracy, and a slap in the face of Ontario voters." He was responding to pressure tactics -- including an overnight sit-in by several opposition members -- employed to force the government to convene hearings on Bill 26, the so-called omnibus bill that would give the government sweeping powers to impose its cost- cutting measures. The opposition got the hearings it wanted, but the democratic process suffered as a result, Mr. O'Toole claimed late last week. And he chalked the filibuster up as sour grapes. "The disruptive action was not about Bill 26," he said. "It was about the opposition parties refusing to accept the verdict of the provincial election, and now attempting to deny the legislature its rightful man- ate. "Their holding the legislature | hostage was a slap in the face of | democracy, and a slap in the face of Ontario voters." Outraged opposition members . mounted a fierce fight against the i #4 omnibus bill, which among other a | things would give the government he power to close hospitals, merge » O'TOOLE prices and impose user fees, and make changes to Ontario privacy laws. Mr. O'Toole, however, said the legislation is just one of the necessary tools the government will use to pursue its mandate of cost and deficit reduction. "We want to deliver on that mandate, but we need the legislative tools to do the job," said Mr. O'Toole. "The Liberals and NDP simply cannot accept that Ontario's spendthrift decade has ended." municipalities, deregulate drug -g™> Ch oo a > pe ASS , oe 8% other 2 ¢ a, nO M pe od ] a RRR / Re pein 98 > you like. Police Issue alert over sex offender By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star Durham Regional Po- lice have taken the unusu- al step of issuing a warn- ing about a convicted sex offender who may visit the area. Donald John Jones, age 42, was released from the Kingston Penetentiary on warrantexpiry, after serv- ing his full sentence for ag- gravated assault on an elderly Ontario woman. He may frequent the Uxbridge area, police warned in a statement last week. Police say information and background indicate that the man represents a risk for assaultive and sexually assaultive behav- 1or against females of all SR, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm ages. | Mr. Jones, 59", 168 pounds, 1s of medium build with brown hair, blue eyes and a full beard. He is believed to be living in the Newmarket area, but may also frequent Ux- bridge, police say. Police said they have is- sued a potentially danger- ous person warning to the public after careful delib- eration. They believe there is a compelling pub- lic interest served by in- forming the public of his release, which outweighs private concerns. "This Police Service has concern for the immediate safety of the public and has probable grounds to believe it is in the public interest to disclose this in- formation and that the record of Donald John Jones reveals a grave health and safety hazard to the public," a police statement reads.
