10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 24, 1995 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Celebration planned at Cornish Students proud to be Canadian By Lindsay Wilson At R.H. Cornish P.S. this month, students are learning about national- ism and why they are proud to be Canadian. Grade 8 students of Reg Philip's have been visiting the classes and doing Ca- nadian activities with the students, reading, playing games or just giving infor- mation. To promote R.H. Cor- nish's own Canada Day, class 82 had developed a contest. The students have to come up with a Ca- nadian door, or bulletin board. For instance, Ms. Ad- derley's Grade 2 class has done their door with a "Ca- nadian Things" theme. Ms. McShanes' Grade 3 is doing a Dennis Lee poem. They are illustrating dif- ferent parts of the poem. Mr. Addison's Grade 5 class' theme is "High On Canada." They have bal- loons with the names of all the provinces on them. These are just some of the wonderful things here. The school has made a gigantic Canadian flag with the signatures of all of the students from R.H. Cornish displayed. On Oct. 27, R.H. Cor- nish 1s having a "red, white" day, where every student dresses up in Ca- nadian clothes or goes cra- zy wearing all the red and white they want. In addi- tion to this, the excellence assembly that occurs the last Friday of every month will be hosted by class 82. Skits, plays, poems and speéches all dealing with Canada are to be included. The community is wel- come to attend the assem- bly. There are limited seats, but everyone is wel- come. Please call the school at 985-4468 if you are coming to see all of the doors the students have prepared with our Proud to be Canadian theme. Lindsay is a Grade 8 student at R.H. Cornish P.S.) New Parent Advisory Council rep will be liaison with school board Roz Wordley's first job will be getting to know Scugog's schools, and the people associated with them. That's because she'll be acting as haison between the local level and Durham Region's public school board, part of her duties as Scugog's representative on the new Regional Parent Advisory Council. Mrs. Wordley of Port Perry was appointed to the volunteer position last Wednesday night (Oct. 18), and will serve for the next two years on the board of 21 parents from across Durham. The council's job will be to represent the views of the school community as it relates to board matters, and is part of the board's system plan efforts to culti- vate partnerships with communities. Mrs. Wordley, who moved to Port Perry from England with her family four years ago, has three children in the school system here in Scugog, and became involved with parent advisory councils locally to acquaint herself with the Canadian educa- tion system. WORDLEY ~~ "Because I'm new to this country, 5 a way to learn about schools here was to join the School Advisory committee," she said. As Scugog"s council representa- tive, she will be working closely with local schools and parents, even- tually through the local councils that are to be set up at each of Scugog's eight schools. "They will have a say; they cer- tainly will," she said. Mrs. Wordley 1s a registered nurse who works at community Memorial Hospital in Port Perry, and with the St. Elizabeth Health Care organization. She predicted a good deal of the council's business will involve helping the board of education to set priorities in the face of deep funding cuts introduced by the provincial government. "I think it will be a learning process for the first year," she said of the posting. G.1.C.
