na RES L * " "A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 3, 1995 - 17 ek SPORTS Coaching staff pleased ModJacks win home opener over Georgina By Wally Donaldson Special to the Star Chic Carnegie and Brett Puckrin could find very little to complain about following a success- ful season opener for the Port Perry ModJacks Sun- day night at Scugog Are- na. Returnee Mike Pigeau did what he does best with the puck and a solid for- mer midget unit currently plyingits skillsin the Cen- tral Ontario Junior C Hockey League scoffed at thoughts of being consid- ered primarily a rookie line. Dennis with 5:41 elapsed in the third period, turned back the Georgina Ice 6-5, kicking off what should be a highly successful cam- paign. "We played a smart game for the most part, keeping the penalties to a manageable number," ob- served Carnegie, Port Perry's head skipper who stresses a strong transi- tion game. "I want us to be physical out there, but not to the point where we're shorthanded all of the time." Abiding by his play- book, Carnegie went with a four-line rotation and while receiving the effort ~~ Mod ocke, on the strength of a goal by Todd expected on all counts, he was especially impressed with the output of his big line - Pigeau, Keith Leslie and Steve Barkwell. Pigeau collected two goals and Leslie finished with a goal and helper. Barkwell, showcasing his playmaking skills, collect- ed a pair of assists. Another notable player letting fly with his shots from the blueline was 20- year-old Matt Pyke, a sol- id rearguard who made good on two effective, low shots. He also added an as- sist. Pyke played the last two seasons on a Junior C lev- el in Fergus, helping the Devils to a league title be- fore bowing to Mount or- est Patriots in post-season play. Heis a sports admin- istration student at Dur- ham College in Oshawa. "I had about 30 points with the Devils and I'd like to contribute offen- sively for the ModJacks," says Pyke, "as soon asI get in better shape. I was lost a few times tonight, so I'll be working more on my de- fence." Tim Owen, Todd Ham- blin, Steve Knispel, Mike Hewitt and Jason Calla- han replied for the Ice, who scored the first goal of the game, but never got a lead back throughout the contest. A pair of familiar faces were at each end of the ice surface with returnee Rick Hutchinson getting the call in goal for Port Perry and former ModJack Chris Faulkner supplying the puckstopping for his new club. Both were less than spectacular, but did high- light a few excellent stops. Faulkner had the difficult time seeing through a maze of traffic in front of him, especially when Pyke unloaded his drives from the blueline. Hutchinson didn'tlook good on three of the goals, but once the sea- son progresses, his coach- es are confident of a quick recovery. Hutchinson can rest as- sured he will get plenty of support from his experi- enced defensive corp. "We've got five experi- enced defencemen and - that will help a lot," says assistant coach Puckrin. Modacks were without the services of veteran blueliner Gavin Co- chrane, who has been out with a suspension. Once he returns, the ModJacks will have the advantage of astrongnucleus. ModJdacks scored two goals on the powerplay. But there is room for im- Turnto Page 18 . MBA = A ? Me Kad & Waltex Black Sox won the MBA championship on Sunday. Dropping the puck to mark the official start of the season is Dave Jackson of Mother Jackson Open Kitchens and Ward 5 Councillor Karen Puckrin. The Peewee A team is set and ready to fly for this coming season. The enthu- siasm was high as the boys won the first two exhibition games beating Uxbridge 7-1 on Friday night at home and defeat- ing the Oshawa Blackhawks on Satyr- day 9-4 in Oshawa. The following is the roster for this season starting with Chris Monsma and Carl Evans in goal, Tim Jones, Sean Jeffery, Grant Hooker and Dave Justynski on defense with Braden Tar- botton, Steve Wygerde, Matt McMas- ter, Scott Brownson, Mark Blakley, Chris Skerratt, Jason Whitworth, Dane Gray and Dean Van Camp playing for- ward. Garry Geer is the head coach, Ed Teno is the assistant coach and Ralph McCullough is the team manager. On Friday night against Uxbridge Dave Justynski opened the scoring with a bullet from the point assisted by Grant Hooker and Braden Tarbotton. Befored the first period ended Dave scored his second of the night from Mark Blakley. The game remained at 2-0 until mid way through the second period when Mark Blakley scored assisted by Matt McMaster and only 30 seconds later Ja- son Whitworth scored assisted by Mark and Matt. Less than two minutes later Mark scored his second of the game from Braden and Sean Jeffery. In the third period Tim Jones scored from the point assisted by Matt McMas- ter. Jason Whitworth finished the scor- ing with his second unassisted. On Saturday against the Oshawa Blackhawks Steve Wygerde scored our only goal in the first period assisted by Braden and Matt. Down 3-1 going into the second period the boys got down to business with eight goals. Steve netted two more to complete his hat trick with Chris Skerratt assisting on both and Braden on one. Jason scored assisted by Dave. Mark scored twice with Jason as- sisting on both. Braden also had a two goal night assist going to Matt and two to Steve. Sean finished the scoring on a hard shot from the point assisted by Grant. If you want to see exciting fast paced hockey watch for this team on Friday nights. The goaltending is superb, the defense is strong and the team knows how to score, combine this with great coaching and you get excitement. We wish Dean Van Camp a speedy re- covery as he had his appendix out last week. Who knows what the score would have been if Dean was in the lineup.
