When Mr. Siegel called the meeting to order, he asked a number of times for Mr. Jones to step for- ward and open the pro- ceedings; but the presi- dent didn't appear. He had left the building. Mr. Shepherd won acclaim in his riding last spring when he voted against the federal gov- ernment"s gun laws. "It was my decision at that time that I would not participate in a process that did not follow the pro- cedures for annual gener- al meetings," said Mr. Jones. "It's highly outra- geous. I don't believe it's legitimate at all." _ He said the MP and his supporters pandered to the gun lobby in an effort to fill the room with bodies and seize control of the rid- ing association. "What he has done is kow-towed and bowed to - and enlisted support of the gun lobby," said Mr. Jones, who before the meeting denied an anti- abortion agenda had driv- en the executive which ran the riding association for three years. "That's just sour grapes," said Mr. Shep- herd in reply. "The bottom line is, t ey just didn't show up." He doesn't deny that some of his supporters on hand Thursday night were foes of the federal legisla- tion he voted against. "There's undoubtedly some people impressed with our stand there. And they wanted to come and support me," he said. "But it's still a demo- cratic process we're under here... if more are on one side than another, that's the way itis." Mr. Jones, though, in- sists there were more than numbers at play at the meeting. He will appeal the proceedings and the acclamation of officers, but won't go to an arbitra- tion committee of the Lib- eral. He said it's the LPCO that committed the errors of process, and having that body judge an appeal would be "unreasonable." When the dust had cleared Thursday night, jubilant Liberals circulat- ed in the arena, and walked forward to greet Mr. Shepherd, shaking hands and embracing. Several of them said the same thing: "We got it back." New president Ken Dykeman said in a brief interview following the meeting he had come to Blackstock expecting a contest for executive posi- tions, and had therefore worked hard to gather support for his slate of can- didates.
