What remains to be seen now 1s just how the fund- ing cuts will be imple- mented, said Councillor Pearce. They could come as across the board fund- ing reductions, be specifi- cally aimed at capital pro- jects, or come in the form of a reduction of funding for the provincial Munici- pal Affairs ministry. Whatever the case, mu- nicipal politicians are be- ing shown by the new Tory government that town- ships and regions will have to be run in a busi- ness-like fashion, and some tough decisions will have to be made at the lo- Certificates DJ TAYLOR [INSURANCE BROKERS LTD. 169 North St., Port Perry LIL 1B7 Guaranteed Investment presents rder Mystery Dinner Theatre Includes... In others, municipalities will have to look at the services they provide, and the fees charged for use of public halls, arenas and parks. Scugog's municipal workers probably don't have to worry about lay- offs, said Councillor Pearce, noting that the township operates on a "lean" staffing comple- ment. But services provided by the township and the cost to use facilities ought to be examined by the council as a whole, she said. "I think we're into look- ing at servicing," she said. G.l.C. "Certainly you'll see more user fees," she add- ed. "And you'll probably see the user fees we do have increased." Councillor Pearce sug- gested township council open its books and plan for ways of operating with 20 per cent less govern- ment funding for opera- tions that are backed by the province. Township administra- tor Earl Cuddie agreed that a re-examination of projects and services will be necessary to prepare for deep funding cuts this fall. "It's alittle early to spec- ulate (on what local cuts might have to be made) be- cause we don't have the details of the areas (the Premier) is cutting," he said. "But it'll sure be dra- matic." Mr. Cuddie said the funding crunch will leave local politicians in a diffi- cult position: Do they cut services, which is sure to. irritate some residents, or raise taxes dramatically to maintain the level of service people are accus- tomed to? The tax issue has be- come obvious in the past several months, with nu- merous residents signing and sending off petitions to all levels of government demanding restraint. "Joe Public's not pre- pared to handle any more taxes," said Mr. Cuddie. Durham East MPP John O'Toole, a member of the Tory caucus, could not be reached for comment. received, operator J.
