Food banks here and elsewhere are finding themselves under increasing stress to serve a clientelle that, despite claims of recovery in the national economy, continues to grow, not diminish. We've seen the trend continue in ongoing coverage of the local food bank's efforts at raising awareness and stocking their shelves. The people keep coming, seeking assistance, and you can bet that the majority of them would rather not; they have to. Add to that the fact that a large number of the people assisted by Operation Scugog and other regional food banks are children, and you have a tragic picture. And that number could grow once more as the province tightens its regulations surrounding social assistance payments, at least in the short term. It is to be sincerely hoped that the government is right, and pain ses now will result in significant gains in the future. That's politics. The reality is that in the meantime, there will be people right here, in Scugog, who are unable to meet the nutritional needs of their children. And we have to be there for them. So here's a note of support for the IGA, and the effort the store is making. And here's a reminder that it takes little money and effort to make a contribution, and that every bit helps. When you give to the food bank, you give to your community, and help to make it a better, more caring place. Please help during the summer food drive, and in further efforts by Operation Scugog. When we looked at our new "home to be," com- pletely flanked by "parkland," the decision to move to Blackstock was made. Without a doubt my family will be the most affected by the planned changes, i.e. parkland to residential. There will be an immediate impact not only of our enjoyment of privacy and openess, but consider also the strong effect on property value, drainage and three septic beds Please Turn to Page 7 WHEN....? 20 YEARS AGO Wednesday, July 30, 1975 To the Editor: In a recent letter to the editor concerning the "Welcome to Blackstock Park," the headlines clearly indicate that Fred Ford does not speak for the majority of the residents of Blackstock on this issue. The inference is that Ron Martyn does... This is certainly news to me and other residents that are not directly involved in ram- ming through the sale of the park. Nor are they concerned about the impact on the residents living near the park. Some 85 people attended the Carter-Hood family picnic. The oldest person there was Cory Hood of Oshawa and youngest person was Rick Ballard, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Ballard. The main plans for the new hospital have been approved. Mr. Herb Brooks was the chairman and Mr. Gordon Reesor the secretary. Neighbors and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Marshall, nee Verna Niddery of Prospect, held a party in their honor on the occasion of their recent marriage and before leaving to make their home in Bram pton. 30 YEARS AGO Thursday, July 29, 1965 Dale Hallett of Sonya and Ron Short of Port Perry are two local hockey enthusiasts who are attending the Billy Harris Hockey School held at the Double Rink Arena in Toronto. Kathleen McGarry, 18, of the USA has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Don Wallace and their daughter Donna, for the past two weeks. The visit is part of the Lions Club student exchange programme. Mr. and Mrs. G. Terpstra blocked their garage door and dug out the asphalt driveway after a thunderstorm flooded their basement with 21 inches of water, causing considerable damage. The couple only moved into their new home at the corner of Lilla and Paxton Streets one month ago. 10YEARS AGO Tuesday, June 30, 1985 June Aldridge discovered she owned shares in $400 million worth of buried treasure. The treasure tucked away in the sunken Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Atocha, had been lying at the ocean floor in Key West since 1622. The Health Unit closed the beach in Caesarea, disallowing the Regatta to hold its annual swimming events during the long weekend event.
