"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 25, 1995 - 15 = SPORTS Greenbank Gamblers' bats coming The Greenbank Gam- bler bats have been on va- cation for the past three or four weeks and on Monday night in Oshawa the trend continued as they lost to the Oshawa Juniors by a 2-0 score. But on Thursday night in Ianson Park in Green- bank the Gamblers seemed to regain their bat- ting eye as they turned a 1-0 deficit to the Markham Waxers in the fourth in- ning in to an eventual 6-1 victory. This was a welcome sight to the Gamblers management as the club was losing close games due to alack of run produc- tion. The 2-0 loss to Oshawa was typical of the team play recently as Oshawa scored twice in the first in- ning and kept Greenbank off the scoreboard, as the | Gamblers wasted a good pitching effort by Bryon aranieski. And in Greenbank on Thursday the Gamblers appeared to still be in their slump as Mark Gore- ski gave up a lead off triple in the first inning and their next batter promptly singled him home for an early 1-0 Markham lead. But Goreski settled down after that and shut out Markham the rest of the way. In the fourth in- Junior Merchants try to get back into game shape This sports report for the Junior Mer- chants Fastball team is sponsored by Mike Tobin Photography, Tri Son Pav- ing, Port Perry IGA, and Millwork Home Centre. After a period of inactivity, the Port Perry Junior Merchants were back on the diamond last week and tried to get themselves back into playing shape by being involved in four ball games. On Monday, Port travelled to Markham and the game turned out to be a real pitching duel between Jeff Card and Cam, the Markham pitcher. Both teams left plenty of base runners, but unfortunately it was Markham who struck in the bottom of the ninth with a long sacrifice ball to score the only run of the game. Card struck out 12, walked three, allowed only five hits and no earned runs. On Tuesday night, the Oshawa Heat were in town with their usual powerful lineup, and Brad Bricknell's grand slam in the first inning put the Junior Merchants in a deep hole. In the second, Cochrane reached base on a single and was moved to third on a Laird single and scored on an Empring- ham RBI single. In the bottom of the sixth, the home side scored four runs when Card, Mau- cLennan, McBride and Moase were driven in by timely hitting. Vennin struck out four, walked four, allowe eight hits and four earned runs. This 6-4 comeback win for the Jun- iors against a strong men's team was a good morale booster in preparation for the heavy schedule over the next three weeks. The team appreciated the excellent contributions of Paul Linton and Doug Short as they helped the Junior Mer- chants on short notice due to injuries and vacations. On Saturday night, the Port Juniors layed a double header against the top Bret year Midgets in Ontario. There were 33 Midgets from across the prov- ince involved in a weekend evaluation camp based in Oshawa. These players were all competing for a spot on a select Midget team which will participate in the Canadian Games in 1996. In the first game, Port jumped ahead into a 3-1 lead but unfortunately the Midgets were able to score a run in each of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to win this evenly played game by a score of 4-3. Port left eight base runners stranded and in the sixth inning, with bases loaded, were unable to bring home that tying run. Card pitched six innings, striking out three, walking two, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. In the second game, the teamd wel- comed back Denis Smith, a former player to help out the depleted pitching staff for this double header. Port struck early scoring two runs, and the score re- mained 2-1 goinginto the seventh. In the top of the seventh, the Junior Merchants scored an additional two runs to have a commanding 4-1 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, the Mid- gets did not give up and the abilities for which they were chosen for these tryouts paid off when they got some timely hitting to score three earned runs. This entertaining game, which ended in a 4-4 tie was a pleasure to watch for those fans who were present from both teams. The Greenbank gang strick again in the fifth for a pair of runs on hits by Steve Durham, Colin Ne- well and Byron Baranie- i ski. Brian Till closed out the scoring in the sixth on a line drive home run to straightaway center field. The past week saw the welcome return of first sacker l'revor Till who has been sitting out the season due to back problems but he had a hit in Oshawa and a sacrifice R.B.L against Markham which is great news for the Gam- bler attack. This week the club is in to life? Richmond Hill on Monday night and Oshawa Mickey Finns visit Greenbank this Thursday. Friday night the Gam- blers start the O.A.S.A. Midget Angels eliminated The Port Perry Scugog Angels Midget Club has struggled at times this year as they are in a re- building stage. They have played some exciting ball and are in the middle of the league in standings with a six win, nine loss and one tie record. In Provincial play the girls almost pulled it out. n game one a 3-0 loss to Brampton didn't sit well. Jennifer Eagan took the loss as Brampton didn't score until the sixth in- ning. The girls were fired up in game two as they banged out 16 hits and a 7- 1 win over rival Oshawa. Pitcher Emily Renaud threw a four hitter. Cathy File, Sara Cain, Laurie Dudgeon and Leanne Gos- lin led the team attack in hitting. In game three Jen Harp- er had a 7-4 win over King- ston. The Port girls jumped out to a 7-0 lead and hung on. Cain, File, ~ Dudgeon and Robin Ad- amson came up big with bats. Tracy Weightman with a three run double. In games four despite 13 hits the team came up 6-4 lossers to Markham and were knocked out. Sara Cain with three hits was the star at bat. Second baseman Kim Poppleton had a great defensive game but fate was against them. This past weekend saw local Angels Sara Cain and Tracy Weightman in- vited to the 1997 Canada games tryout camp in Guelph. dara Cain im- pressed everyone in a group of 30 players from 139 Water St., Re ee. Last year and this year the Canada Games coaches have looked at 60 players and also an all star team from North York entered a team and selected local Angels pitcher Emily Re- naud, third baseman Leanne Goslin and out- fielder Cathy File. Our three girls played very well and will be looked at by the coaches. Angel coaches Rick Fin- lay along with Robin Sluce of Whitby will be coaching the 1997 Ontario team in Brandon, Manitoba. An- gels coach Dan McNeill coached one of the Ontario teams to an impressive four win, two losses and a tie. Port Perry's Sara Cain was outstanding at the plate with a four for four game and some outstand- ing catches in center field. Sara was injured makin a diving catch and missed the final three games. Sara has a very good chance to make the team as the center fielder. Keep working hard and good luck Sara. e Midget Angels pla a double oe ar home Sunday night. Come out and give your support.
