New computers in plans for local schools By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Scugog's public elementary and high schools will be seeing their computer equipment upgraded over the next several years as the Durham Board of Education attempts to meet targets set out in a recent report. Trustees recently approved a $500,000 expenditure for board-wide computer systems upgrades, which will supply machinery and software for students in both elementary and secondary school, said Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew. Needs have been identified and schedules for purchasing of new equipment drawn up as the board attempts to meet a computer-to-student ratio of 10 to one, Mrs. Drew said. All that's needed to fulfill the board's requirements 1s continued financial support from the provincial Ministry of Education, she said. "We may have to step.back from that if they don't come up with (the grants)," said Mrs. Drew. Here's a brief run-down of the schedule for equip- ment purchases locally: 0 Port Perry High School will see 5 computers pur- chased in 1995, 60 in 1998 and another 60 in 2000; Q Cartwright High School will receive seven new machines in 1996, eight in 1997 and eight in 1999, and Q The elementary schools across the township are slated to receive new computers between this year and 2001. Training available through summer St. John's offers first aid courses St. John Ambulance - Durham Region branch teaches people of all ages that you can make a differ- ence in your home, work, or school when an emer- gency happens. Too many times, a child chokes, a person faints, an emergen- cy situation occurs and no one has had First Aid and C.P.R. training to make a difference. We can teach you how. In Durham Re- gion last year over 8,000 people were trained in First Aid and C.P.R. by St. John Ambulance. Many of them made a difference by using their First Aid skills to help someone in an emergency situation. St. John Ambulance will be offering a Standard First Aid/Heartsaver C.P.R. course in Oshawa on July 17, 18, 1995 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Ajax on July 18, 20, 1995, and in Whitby on July 26, 27, 1995 to teach people life saving skills.
