"A Family Tradition for 128 Years" F PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 4, 1995 -13 Deer farmer 'buys' former minister to tour at his farm By Kelly Lown Port Perry Star A local deer farmer paid $1,600 for the services of the ex-Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. Willy Casteels, a deer and poultry farmer, purchased the services of Elmer Buchanan for his Scugog Island Farm for half a day on June 22. Mr. Buchanan, who lost his seat in the recent elec- tion, was purchased by Mr. Casteels at a charity auc- tion held March 25 in Oshawa. All proceeds from the auction went to the Ontario Deer Farmers Association, a group whose mandate is to act as the lob- - bying group between gov- ernment and its members. The group actively pro- motes deer farming in Ontario. Mr. Casteels said he wanted Mr. Buchanan's services more last year than this year, but still saw a need to hire him and inform him of his farming operation. Although Mr. Buchanan did not perform any real | farm work -- he was injured in a car accident last year and still has hip problems -- Mr. Casteels made sure his farm help was up to date on the issues that affect farmers. Mr. Buchanan toured the facility on Demara Road with Mr. Casteels keeping him "updated and knowl- edgeable on what's going on in the poultry and deer industry." Mr. Buchanan, who has donated his time for the past two years at the auc- tion, said he did it to prom- ote and lend his support for diversification and to offer other farmers the oppor- tunity to earn income. ho £ A & a TOWRBHIP ur 5CUGOQG Sunday 2nd 9th 16th 30ch Sunday 6th KELLY LOWN/PORT PERRY STAR 1 3th WILLY CASTEELS purchased Eimer Buchanan, the former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Af- fairs, at an auction for a day of work on a local deer and poultry farm.
