York Regional Police recovered about 700 marijuana plants after a raid at an industrial building on Ringwood Dr. in Stouffville June 21. Officers were acting on a tip that pot was being grown in the area, but had to carry out surveil- lance to uncover the operation. i Police trailed a man to a local hydro- ponic supply house, then followed him back to the industrial area. Upon enter- ing the four industrial units they found six tables full of marijuana plants that had just been harvested. Two men -- one from Stouffville and another from Toronto -- were arrested at the scene and charged with cultivat- ing a narcotic and possession of a nar- cotic, said York Police. : And on June 26, a local man was charged in connection with the opera- tion. The 43-year-old Port Perry man has been charged with cultivation of mari- juana. The students have al- ready been selected by the Youth for Understanding Exchange program to live in Canada for 11 months and attend school, howev- er, there is a chronic lack of host families. Students will be arriv- ing in August from Fin- land, Germany, Holland, Mexico, Brazil and Japan, but so far they will have no host families to settle down with. Each year, the Youth for Understanding organiza- tion and its hundreds of volunteers coordinate in- ternational exchanges for more than 4,000 students around the world. "My experience as an ex- change student was thrill- ing," said Stefan Klien, an exchange student from Germany. "I had an im- pression about how North America would be from watching movies before I came here. 1 quickly learned that there were many small but important differences." Through participation in the program, host fami- 'host exhange students lies get to learn about the place their student comes from, their cultural differ- enceg, geography and lan- guage. The student aged 15-18 years\are expected to par- ticipatedn their host fami- lies as though they were another member of the family.
